Postdoctoral Researcher in Air-Sea-Ice Interactions

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden's most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. Here you will find broad expertise that contributes to solutions for important societal challenges. Earth is a dynamic planet that is constantly changing. To understand how our planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments, and advanced models. Our research and education cover many different areas: rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural science and engineering with social science and is often interdisciplinary. The department employs over 300 people from more than 30 countries, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Paleobiology • Wind Energy For more information, see: https://www.uu.se/institution/geovetenskaper The successful candidate for this position will be employed at the Air, Water and Landscape Science (LUVAL) program at the Department of Earth Sciences. Responsibilities Turbulent flows at the air–sea–ice interface in the marginal ice zone (MIZ)—the transition zone between open water and pack ice—are critical for polar weather, ecosystems, and climate on both local and global scales. The presence of sea ice floes, varying in size from centimeters to hundreds of kilometers, creates an exceptionally heterogeneous surface with varying roughness and temperature profiles. These characteristics significantly affect momentum and heat fluxes across the air–sea–ice interface and other processes. Despite this importance, our understanding of turbulent flows at the interface in the MIZ remains fragmented and poorly represented in current weather and climate models. The postdoctoral project will focus on: implementing new turbulent parameterizations for the marginal ice zone (MIZ) in Earth system models (regional or global), and assessing the impact of MIZ processes on polar extreme cyclones and their broader consequences for polar climate. Requirements PhD in atmospheric or ocean science, or a related field, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD in the above subject. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Preferably, the degree should have been completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been completed earlier. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, etc. Documented experience with numerical modeling, preferably with tools such as WRF, EC-Earth, or sea ice models. Strong competence in scientific programming and computational modeling. Ability to independently drive research projects while actively contributing to collaboration in international and interdisciplinary research teams. Merits Good knowledge of Linux/Unix environments and strong expertise in Python and Bash scripting are highly desirable. Candidates are encouraged to actively contribute with their own ideas, methods, and perspectives to the project. We especially value creativity, engagement, and strong research capabilities. About the Position This is a fixed-term position for 2 years. Full-time. Start date: November 1, 2026, or by agreement. Location: Uppsala. For additional information about the position, contact: Lichuan Wu, [email protected]. Welcome to submit your application by September 3, 2026, UFV-PA 2026/2421. Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning

At the Department of Systems and Control, we develop both theory and concrete tools for designing systems that learn, reason, and act in the real world based on a seamless combination of data, mathematical models, and algorithms. Our research integrates expertise from machine learning, optimization, control theory, and applied mathematics, spanning diverse application areas such as medicine, energy systems, biomedical systems, neuroscience, and security. The department maintains a broad network of long-standing international collaborators worldwide, including University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Imperial College London, University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, and Aalto University. Responsibilities This project focuses on developing, analyzing, and applying new methods in reinforcement learning and model predictive control (MPC), both stochastic and deterministic formulations. The emphasis will be on developing methods for robust reinforcement learning and/or MPC formulations. We are particularly interested in environments where the cost or reward function is non-ergodic. In these situations, expected costs/rewards do not capture the behavior of individual rollouts, requiring new designs. We will develop and analyze generally applicable algorithms and models together with our collaborators. The postdoctoral researcher will be jointly supervised by Assistant Professor Dominik Baumann (Aalto University) and, regarding MPC aspects, we will collaborate with Assistant Professor Johannes Köhler at Imperial College London. Technical components may include reinforcement learning, state models, MPC, deep learning, and probabilistic modeling in general. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Ideally, the degree should have been awarded no more than three years ago. When calculating the three-year period, the deadline for applications is the reference point. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been awarded earlier. Special circumstances include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, etc. We seek candidates with: • strong interest in and experience developing new methods in reinforcement learning and/or model predictive control, • ability to communicate technical material effectively in spoken and written English, • good working knowledge of programming (preferably in Python). • personal qualities such as a high level of creativity, accuracy, and/or a structured approach to problem-solving are essential. Publications at leading machine learning conferences and/or leading control engineering journals are a significant plus. Desirable/Meriting Factors Experience with industry collaboration is valuable. As a person, you are creative, thorough, and have a structured approach. In selecting among applicants, we will assess their ability to independently drive their work forward, to collaborate with others, to maintain a professional approach, and to analyze and work with complex problems. Great weight will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability.
