PhD Student in Biology, Environmental Science Focus
Department of Aquatic Resources Doctoral Field: Biology. Assessment and prioritization of marine and coastal restoration measures. There is an acute need for restoration in coastal and marine areas. The restoration challenge is complex, as many areas are affected by large-scale pressures that interact with local effects. To meet this challenge, we need to understand how ecological knowledge can be combined with societal processes, both at local and larger spatial scales. The doctoral position is part of a project that will support effective strategic planning for marine coastal restoration by developing key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of coastal restoration measures based on ecological, social, and economic sustainability aspects. The project group is interdisciplinary and includes researchers in ecology, sociology, and national economics. The project's results will form the basis for restoration measures at both local and national levels. Duties: The main task is to conduct doctoral research under supervision, which includes developing the doctoral student's methodological, theoretical, analytical, written, and oral presentation skills. The doctoral student will use a range of different methods, including stakeholder dialogues, geographic data analysis, and validation and testing of indicators in case studies. You will develop maps of natural values that contribute important knowledge for sustainable coastal planning and identify hotspots where restoration measures would provide the greatest cost-effectiveness in relation to ecological, social, and economic goals. Your work will contribute to increased knowledge about how spatially targeted measures and spatial optimization can affect the effectiveness of restoration efforts, as well as processes for integrating knowledge from multiple sources in management work. Uppsala University, Department of Medical Sciences Description of the Subject Area Hematology is a central clinical and academic subject area with strong connections to both research and education as well as to highly specialized care. The subject encompasses diagnosis and treatment of malignant and benign blood disorders, including leukemias, lymphomas, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes as well as stem cell transplantation and advanced cell therapy. Duties The professorship entails overall responsibility for exercising collective and strategic academic leadership and for the long-term development of the hematology subject area. The person employed is expected to lead and develop research in hematology and actively contribute to education at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels. The professor shall supervise doctoral students and contribute to the development of the research environment, including actively seeking external research funding. The position also includes clinical work as a specialist physician in hematology at Academic Hospital, which involves close integration of research, education, and clinical activities. The presence of sea ice floes, varying in size from centimeters to hundreds of kilometers, creates an exceptionally heterogeneous surface with varying roughness and temperature profiles. These characteristics significantly affect momentum and heat fluxes across the air–sea–ice interface and other processes. Despite this importance, our understanding of turbulent flows at the interface in the MIZ remains fragmented and poorly represented in current weather and climate models. The postdoctoral project will focus on: implementing new turbulent parameterizations for the marginal ice zone (MIZ) in Earth system models (regional or global), and assessing the impact of MIZ processes on polar extreme cyclones and their broader consequences for polar climate.
