Postdoctoral Researcher with Focus on Design of Management and Collaboration Systems

The Swedish Defence University is an internationally leading academic institution in defense, crisis management, and security. We offer a unique academic environment where the civil and military sectors meet. About the Workplace The position is located at the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILL) in Stockholm. Description of the Research Environment The research environment Leadership and Collaboration for Civil Defense (LedSamCF) at the Swedish Defence University is centered on a research frontier where questions of war leadership, total defense, EU-NATO governance, constitutional preparedness, civil-military collaboration, and social and organizational resilience are central. International research points to the need for adaptive, network-based, and design-oriented ways to lead complex systems, but knowledge is still limited regarding how these principles can be implemented in a civil defense with many independent actors, different legal frameworks, and various technical systems. Against this background, LedSamCF addresses an overarching research question: How can management, collaboration, and other governance be designed, exercised, reviewed, and developed so that civil defense can be implemented effectively and handle simultaneous and overlapping crises and war threats in a legally secure, efficient, and socially sustainable manner? The aim is to build a nationally leading research environment that both develops the scientific knowledge base and delivers concrete solutions for total defense stakeholders. Duties As a postdoctoral researcher, you will primarily work on research within a theme called "Design of Management and Collaboration Systems" within LedSamCF. The design perspective means that your research aims to develop new or improved solutions or design proposals for current problems and challenges in the field. Together with other researchers in the environment, you will help build up and develop the activities. This involves initiating, planning, and conducting research within the theme in dialogue with the client. This includes planning and conducting data collection, data analysis, writing articles, and presenting and disseminating research results in various ways. You may also contribute to our leadership research conducted on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces. There is an opportunity to work on teaching and supervision up to 20% by agreement. Qualifications Requirements: By the application deadline, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in a scientific subject assessed as relevant to the position (for example, human-computer interaction, risk and security/crisis management, design science, systems science, psychology, organization, or cognitive science). The applicant's research must be assessed to align with, and contribute to, the current research environment and the institute's research in leadership and management. Advanced knowledge of Swedish and English is required for the position, as it involves extensive contact with various stakeholders in the sector. Experience in designing and conducting research with a design-oriented perspective (what is the problem – a design/solution proposal is developed – evaluation of the design proposal). Applicants must not have previously been employed as a postdoctoral researcher for more than one year in the same or related subject area at the same employer. Meritorious: Experience in research on management and collaboration, including knowledge of decision-making, problem-solving, and the relationship between situational assessment and situational understanding. Experience in designing research with mixed methods and a design-oriented approach. Experience in practice-oriented research in complex security contexts. Publication of articles in highly ranked peer-reviewed journals in, for example, human-computer interaction, risk and security/crisis management, design science, systems science, psychology, organization, or cognitive science. Preferably, you should have completed your degree no more than three years ago. In calculating the three-year period, the last application deadline is the starting point. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been completed earlier. Special circumstances include, for example, leave due to illness, parental leave, or positions of trust within trade union organizations. Do you not meet all the meritorious qualifications but believe the role suits you? Apply anyway! Personal Qualities To thrive and fit into the role, you should be motivated, organized, and communicative, with a strong ability to take initiative. We expect you to actively participate in the institute's research activities and enjoy collaborating with others. We are also looking for someone who is engaged and present, and who wants to contribute to the Swedish Defence University's professional development, collegial collaborative culture, and social cohesion. It should come naturally to you to share your knowledge and contribute to creating a rewarding and good working environment. Great weight is placed on personal suitability. About the Employment The employment is a fixed-term position according to the central collective agreement for two years on a full-time basis with the possibility of extension for one year. Start date as soon as possible or by agreement. JOB

Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries - Micromechanical Modeling of Cells

Job Responsibilities The next major leap in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept makes it possible to replace the highly flammable organic electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish state battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transportation sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions across multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis and cell manufacturing to characterization, modeling, and scaled production. The two-year postdoctoral project on Micromechanical Modeling and Mechanical Characterization of Contact, Interfaces, and Fracture in Solid-State Battery Cells is located at the Department of Engineering Mechanics (Division of Materials and Structural Mechanics) at the School of Engineering Science (SCI). In a solid-state cell, mechanics determines whether the cell functions: unlike a liquid electrolyte, a solid cell must build up and maintain every solid-solid contact under load, while ion insertion and extraction cause swelling and shrinkage, and interfaces between the active material, electrolyte, and current collector must maintain both adhesion and conductivity at the low stack pressures typical in real applications. The project develops a micromechanical modeling framework that resolves the cell at the particle and interface level and couples its mechanical state to its electrochemical performance, where interface delamination, fracture, and particle fragmentation are represented as the mechanisms that reshape the network of conductive contacts. The framework is validated against experimental data from COMPEL collaborations and delivers a design and operation map, including the cell's safe low-pressure window. The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute mechanical and structural characterization of materials and cells developed in the other projects. Qualifications Required A doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree in solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, computational mechanics, materials science, engineering physics, or a related field, with some experience in batteries or battery materials. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English, as required in daily work. Good skills in computation and numerical modeling, including finite element methods or multiphysics simulation and scientific programming. Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with special focus on gender equality. Meriting At the time of the application deadline, no more than three years since the doctoral degree or foreign equivalent degree was awarded. Experience with solid-state or lithium-ion batteries and familiarity with the mechanics and characterization of battery materials and cells. Practical experience with coupled electro-chemo-mechanical modeling or phase-field modeling of fracture, contact and micromechanics for particle or composite materials, mechanical testing and X-ray tomography, and programming (e.g., Python, C++, or Fortran). Demonstrate an innovative mindset, creativity, and ability to work independently. Good ability to collaborate and ability and interest in working in a team. We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. Become Part of KTH KTH shapes the future through education, research, and innovation.
