Postdoctoral Researcher in Medical Science with a focus on COPD, Physical Activity, and Muscle Function We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position focusing on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), physical activity, physical capacity, and extrapulmonary manifestations of lung disease. The research will be conducted primarily within SCAPIS (Swedish CardioPulmonary bioImage Study) and other clinical research projects at Umeå University. Project Description SCAPIS is a large Swedish population-based study in which over 30,000 participants have undergone comprehensive examinations including lung function, physical activity, body composition, and cardiopulmonary health. The postdoctoral project focuses on the relationships between lung function and diffusion capacity, objectively measured physical activity, and CT-based measures of muscle mass and muscle quality in COPD and other related milder phenotypes. The position also includes research within the COPD-HIIT project as well as other clinical and longitudinal research projects focused on COPD. Responsibilities As a postdoctoral researcher, you will plan and conduct research projects focusing on physical activity, physical capacity, muscle function, and lung disease. This work includes formulating research questions and analysis plans, processing and quality assuring research data, and performing statistical analyses of both cross-sectional and longitudinal data. A central part of the work involves analyzing data from SCAPIS, including lung function and diffusion capacity, objectively measured physical activity via accelerometer, and CT-based measures of muscle mass, muscle quality, and body composition. Responsibilities also include data collection, data processing, and analysis within COPD-HIIT and other clinical research projects involving people with and without COPD. You are expected to independently interpret and synthesize research results, author scientific manuscripts for publication in international journals, and present your research at national and international scientific conferences. You will also contribute to developing new research questions and projects within the field. The work is conducted both independently and in close collaboration with junior and senior researchers from multiple disciplines, including pulmonary medicine, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and epidemiology. Some administrative tasks related to the research projects may also be included. Qualifications To be eligible for a postdoctoral position, you must hold a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, in medical science, physiotherapy, sports science, or another field relevant to the position. This qualification requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made. The position requires documented experience with quantitative analysis of medical, physiological, or health science research data, as well as experience with scientific work in an area relevant to the project's research questions. You must also have documented experience in COPD, physical activity, physical capacity, and extrapulmonary manifestations of lung disease. You should demonstrate the ability to independently plan, conduct, and complete scientific work and have excellent proficiency in English, both spoken and written. The position also requires good collaboration skills and the ability to work both independently and with others in an interdisciplinary research environment. Since parts of the work may involve data collection in direct contact with research participants, good ability to communicate in Swedish or another Scandinavian language is also required. Postdoctoral position in freshwater ecology and climate change
Department of Forest Ecology and Management Project Description: Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts, floods, heatwaves, and storms. Small streams and their surrounding riparian forests are particularly vulnerable to these changes especially in managed forests where streams are already exposed to forestry pressures. Riparian buffers are the primary management tool for mitigating forestry impacts on streams, yet many buffers are poorly designed to maintain key ecological functions, particularly under a changing climate. The project addresses three interlinked questions: 1) how climate-driven extremes affect streams and riparian zones in managed forests; 2) which riparian buffer characteristics are most likely to enhance resistance and resilience to such extremes; and 3) how scientific knowledge on riparian buffers is translated into management guidelines and policy frameworks for climate adaptation. This is a time-bound knowledge synthesis project that integrates scientific and applied evidence on climate-adapted riparian buffer management, focusing on boreal and hemi-boreal forest ecosystems. The project compiles and evaluates peer-reviewed literature, management guidelines, policy documents and/or available data to produce expected scientific deliverables. About the position The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a collaborative project CLIMRIP (Climate-adapted riparian buffer management: a synthesis of boreal ecosystems and implications for practice) funded by Formas and supervised by principal investigator Associate Prof. Lenka Kuglerová. In Sweden, some 300,000 individuals and families own about 50% of the forestland that spans across two-thirds of the country. These family forest owners will need to undertake the preponderance of actions for creating more biodiverse forests in Sweden. In an interdisciplinary project funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, we pose three specific research questions: What salient elements in cognitive models represent family forest owners' perceptions and judgment strategies about forest biodiversity on their ownerships? Do family forest owners have the capability, opportunity and motivation to change towards biodiversity-enhancing forest management behaviors? Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology We are seeking an engaged and motivated postdoctoral researcher who wishes to participate in an interdisciplinary research collaboration between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå University, and University of Massachusetts. In Sweden, approximately 300,000 individuals and families own about 50 percent of productive forest land, which covers roughly two-thirds of the country's area. These family forest owners will need to implement a large portion of the measures required to strengthen biological diversity in Sweden's forests. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, we are investigating three central research questions: What prominent elements in family forest owners' cognitive models describe their perceptions of and assessment strategies regarding biological diversity in their own forest holdings? Do family forest owners have the ability, opportunities, and motivation to change their behavior toward forest management practices that enhance biological diversity? Can interventions offering economic compensation promote family forest owners' transition to forest management practices that enhance biological diversity? To address these questions, we are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who wishes to work with researchers in applied economics, psychology, and forest science.
