The division is a central part of NanoLund, Lund University's major interdisciplinary research center for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Project Description This PhD project focuses on DC characterization and investigation at microwave frequencies of anyonic excitations in graphene-based quantum components. The PhD student will fabricate ultra-high-quality van der Waals heterostructures at Lund Nano Lab and study them using electronic measurements and microwave measurements at low temperatures. The PhD student will also contribute to establishing a new experimental laboratory, including infrastructure for van der Waals component fabrication and installation of a dilution refrigerator reaching temperatures below 10 mK, equipped with a 14 T magnet and connections for both DC and radiofrequency measurements. The position provides extensive practical experience in nanofabrication, cryogenic measurement techniques, microwave electronics, data analysis, and quantum component physics. The PhD student will be an important part of a collaborative research team and will collaborate with research groups at Lund University and leading international institutions. The project combines fundamental quantum physics with a technology-oriented approach to develop new types of nanoelectronic and quantum components. Workplace Description The research group conducts interdisciplinary research with a focus on aging and health. The group is affiliated with the Centre for Aging and Supportive Environments (CASE), coordinates the Swedish national research school on aging and health (SWEAH), and is engaged in the university's strategic focus area Proactive Aging. We are seeking a PhD candidate in gerontology with a focus on medical science and health science. Research Project Description AI is rapidly transforming home care for older adults. Automation tools such as social robots, chatbots, sensor systems, and automated documentation and scheduling are expected to increase efficiency, support independent living, and ease the burden on care systems. At the same time, these technologies may change what counts as "care," who is included or excluded from care, how risks and responsibilities are distributed among older adults, care workers, organizations, and technology providers, and may impact social inequalities and human vulnerability. The PhD position is part of the Nordic-Baltic collaborative project "AI for Mindful Care and Ageing" (AMICA), which examines how vulnerability is constructed, negotiated, and practiced within AI-automated home care for older adults. The project's overarching goals are to: (1) create empirical knowledge about how AI changes experiences of care, care work, inequality, and welfare systems, (2) develop theoretical understanding of how vulnerability is shaped by social identities, life histories, and structural conditions, and (3) contribute to policy and governance frameworks for responsible and ethical AI in home care in the Nordic-Baltic region. The project combines critical social science perspectives with health science, gerontology, and science and technology studies (STS). The PhD candidate will focus on AI-based solutions in Swedish home care and conduct cross-country comparisons in collaboration with researchers and PhD candidates at partner universities in Norway, Finland, and Estonia. Today, few have expertise in both areas, which means the expertise you develop here is both rare and highly sought after. More specifically, there is a gap between overarching goals such as "reduce carbon emissions now" and the concrete control of a data center's cooling system, batteries, and computing hardware. In this project, you will bridge this gap. You will develop a control system that receives overarching goals ("intents") and translates them into a coordinated set of control actions for the facility's physical resources. The models are fed back in the control loop and automatically adapted online using both classical control engineering and AI and reinforcement learning. Subject and Project Description As AI increasingly handles tasks autonomously, the modes of human interaction with AI span a broad spectrum, from deliberate actions such as writing instructions (prompting), rating, and editing, to spontaneous reactions such as eye movements and interaction dynamics. This project investigates how human behavior can be modeled in the context of human–AI interaction. The core of the project is computational behavior modeling. As a PhD student, you will collect and analyze behavioral data in human–AI interaction and develop computational models that capture patterns in human behavior. The research focuses on human–computer interaction and visualization. It includes designing controlled user experiments and applying AI techniques such as reinforcement learning and foundation models (deep learning models). Additionally, your work will involve designing visualization systems that support the analysis, explanation, and communication of complex behavioral data. Responsibilities You will primarily focus on your doctoral research, which includes participation in research projects as well as participation in doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences. Your responsibilities also include contributing to teaching and other departmental work (however, no more than 20% of working time). The employment period will be extended accordingly. Description of the Position You will be active within the research environment Microbial Biogeochemistry in Lund (MBLU) at the Department of Biology, Lund University, under the supervision of Professor Johannes Rousk and Senior Researcher Dr. Lettice Hicks. MBLU is a research environment that studies terrestrial ecosystems to increase our understanding of how soil microorganisms regulate global biogeochemical processes and how these affect ecosystems' responses to environmental changes. We are an interdisciplinary research group consisting of microbial ecologists, ecosystem ecologists, biogeochemists, and model developers who share a common research vision and combine empirical studies with modeling. Our research focuses on carbon and nutrient cycling in soil ecosystems worldwide – from arctic tundra to tropical rainforests and semi-arid grasslands. We are particularly interested in factors affecting the spatial and temporal variation in microbial community structure and function, as well as their resistance to various types of stress. Special emphasis is placed on environmental factors such as soil moisture, temperature, nutrient limitation, salinity, and pH, as well as anthropogenic factors such as tillage, fertilization, and metal pollution. Through field and laboratory experiments, we investigate how microorganisms regulate ecosystem functions and how these are affected by the environment. The ecological knowledge generated is then integrated into models that operate at various spatial and temporal scales. Being a PhD Student As a doctoral student, you are both admitted as a student and employed by Lund University. Doctoral education provides you with training in scientific methodology. You develop the ability to think critically and analytically, to independently formulate and solve scientific problems using appropriate methods, and to make research ethics assessments. During your studies, you will also have the opportunity to participate in research projects and develop your leadership and pedagogical skills. More information about doctoral education at the Faculty of Science is available at naturvetenskap.lu.se Subject and Project Description We are seeking a doctoral student to investigate whether and how soil microbial communities can adapt their characteristics to improve their function during drought and after the drought has ended. The project specifically aims to clarify how microorganisms' resistance and resilience to drought arise, as well as what ecological, physiological, and/or evolutionary mechanisms underlie these processes. The work will combine controlled laboratory experiments, greenhouse pot experiments, and field experiments to increase understanding of how microbial ecology affects ecosystem biogeochemistry. There will also be an opportunity to integrate ongoing studies where experimental drought treatments have been conducted in arctic and other terrestrial ecosystems. The project's central analyses include determining microbial growth in intact soil samples using radioactive and stable isotope tracing methods, as well as measuring biogeochemical processes such as carbon and nutrient cycling. The project offers qualified doctoral education in soil microbial ecology and biogeochemistry. The work is primarily laboratory-based but includes opportunities for fieldwork. The project is particularly suitable for applicants with backgrounds in soil microbial ecology, ecosystem ecology, and biogeochemistry. General Study Plan for Doctoral Education Duties and Responsibilities You will primarily dedicate yourself to your doctoral education, which largely consists of writing a doctoral dissertation. During your studies, you will learn to determine microbial growth rates in intact soil samples by tracing isotope uptake (stable and radioisotopes) in various biomarkers. By determining growth rates under gradients of environmental conditions (e.g., water content), you will be able to determine functional trait compositions, which can be described with mathematical functions and represented in ecosystem flow models. To answer your research questions, you will have the opportunity to use a combination of field experiments (e.g., rain exclusion treatments), greenhouse experiments, and microcosm experiments in the lab. A large portion of the work will be connected to analytical methods in the lab. You will analyze large amounts of biological data extracted from your experimental systems and use advanced analytical methods as well as write scientific articles. You are expected to actively participate in ongoing projects within the research group and plan and conduct your own analyses of how microorganisms' processes depend on water availability and how they can adapt to drought. As a researcher, you will also present your work in seminars and at international conferences. Doctoral education also includes a number of mandatory courses and elective specialized courses that contribute to your development in formulating and presenting scientific questions. In addition to your studies, a maximum of 20% of your working time may be devoted to teaching and other departmental work. Depending on your background, you may teach in introductory biology courses or more advanced courses such as soil and plant ecology.
