Research Infrastructure Specialist in NMR Spectroscopy

Important research areas utilizing NMR include organic chemistry, inorganic coordination chemistry, structure-based drug design, polymer chemistry, physical-chemical studies of soft materials and phase transitions, structural biology, and protein conformational dynamics, aggregation, and amyloid formation. Since 2021, Lund University has invested significant resources in establishing a specially designed NMR Center located at the Department of Chemistry (KILU). The NMR Center is equipped with 3 instruments: an 800 MHz Bruker Avance NEO with 4 channels and 5 mm TCI Z-gradient CryoProbe 1H/13C/15N/2H; a 600 MHz Bruker Avance NEO with 4 channels and 5 mm QCI(P) Z-gradient CryoProbe 1H-19F/13C/15N/31P; and an older 500 MHz Varian/Agilent VNMRS instrument with 4 channels and multiple probes. A full-time research engineer (facility manager) has been managing the NMR Center since its establishment. Duties and Responsibilities The role includes the following tasks: Providing qualified support to users at the NMR Center, including project planning. Training new users on instrument operation. Developing pulse sequences and implementing new experimental methods. Performing experiments. Responsibility for daily operations and maintenance of hardware and software. Planning future investments together with the NMR Center's steering committee. Qualifications Requirements for the position are: A doctoral degree in chemistry, physics, or another subject area relevant to the position, or equivalent competence. Solid knowledge and documented practical experience in NMR spectroscopy. Very good ability to communicate in English, both spoken and written. The position also requires that you are: service-oriented and pedagogical, independent and responsible, analytical and problem-solving, and careful and well-organized. You have the ability to provide qualified support, work systematically with technical challenges, and drive work forward in a quality-conscious manner. This doctoral position offers advanced training in organic synthesis, with a focus on developing new synthetic methods through the use of, but not limited to, photoredox catalysis. Responsibilities You will primarily dedicate yourself to your doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral training courses, seminars, and conferences. The responsibilities mainly involve organic synthesis and molecular design, together with purification and characterization using chromatography and spectroscopic techniques such as LC-MS and NMR. You will be responsible for documenting experimental work, analyzing data, and assisting in the completion of scientific manuscripts. Additionally, the role includes planning experiments and presenting research results at group meetings and seminars. The responsibilities may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (however, no more than 20% of working time). Qualifications To be admitted and employed as a PhD student, you must meet the requirements below. Basic Eligibility Requirements You meet the general eligibility requirements for doctoral education if you have: completed an advanced degree, or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at the advanced level, or acquired equivalent knowledge by other means. Specific Eligibility for Organic Chemistry You meet the specific requirements for organic chemistry if you have: at least 15 higher education credits within the subject area, of which at least 7.5 are at the advanced level, and a thesis of at least 30 higher education credits at the advanced level within the subject area, or a degree as a civil engineer in chemical engineering, biotechnology, ecosystem engineering, or technical nanoscience. Finally, the student must be assessed to have the ability required to complete the education. Good knowledge of advanced organic synthesis. Proficiency in structure determination using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Good ability in written and verbal communication.
