Diversity and Interactions of Plasmid-Dependent Phages in Aquatic Ecosystems
Department of Water and Environment Doctoral Program Subject: Biology Description of the Doctoral Project: Antibiotic resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver behind the spread of AMR is horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids, mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but so far overlooked tool for controlling the spread of resistance genes. This doctoral project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025). The overarching goal of ECOPHARM is to map the mechanisms governing PDPs' interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on the transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in aquatic environments. As a doctoral student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of PDPs in aquatic ecosystems. The work will combine environmental sampling, culture-based methods, metagenomics, genome analysis, and infection assays. You will work in a dynamic and internationally connected research environment at the intersection of microbial ecology, virus-host coevolution, and AMR research. To learn more about our research, you are welcome to visit our website https://www.bionomics-mmlab.com/ Work Responsibilities: As a doctoral student, you are expected to: Design and conduct field sampling in aquatic environments to map PDP communities Perform laboratory experiments to study PDP–plasmid–host interactions under controlled conditions Apply metagenomic and bioinformatic tools to analyze data from microbial and viral communities Contribute to experimental work with phage isolation, cultivation, and infection assays Present results at lab meetings, national and international conferences, and contribute to scientific publications Follow laboratory guidelines for data management Communicate progress and obstacles in a timely and clear manner Collaborate with national and international project partners within the ECOPHARM network Qualifications: Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at the advanced level, or who have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent knowledge within or outside the country (the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7 § 39). Special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in the subject of Biology is held by those who have knowledge equivalent to at least 90 higher education credits (hp) in biological subjects. These must include an independent work and at least 30 hp must be at the advanced level. Furthermore, you must have knowledge of English equivalent to a passing grade in English B/6 from Swedish secondary school. Technical Business Developer for Quantum, Chalmers Next Labs
Work Location: Chalmers Next Labs Office, Campus Johanneberg, Gothenburg Employment Type: Full-time fixed-term position (initial two-year contract) Reporting To: Unit Manager, Quantum Technology Lab Travel: Some travel may be required as part of the role About the Role Are you an ambitious early-career professional looking to bridge the gap between cutting-edge physics and commercial strategy? Can you translate the needs of clients into tangible development plans? We are looking for a Technical Business Developer to be the primary bridge between our deep tech capabilities and our clients' real-world challenges. This is an ideal role for someone relatively new to the workforce who has a solid engineering foundation and is eager to learn the business side of deep tech. While we operate in a highly technical space, we aren't looking for a lab researcher for this role. Instead, we are looking for an exceptional communicator and creative mind. We need someone who can truly listen to our clients, uncover their core problems, and help us design the business offerings that solve them. You will spend your time interacting with industry innovators, identifying what our existing clients need next, and exploring new markets where our technology can make an impact. You don't need to be an expert in quantum technology on day one; we will teach you the details. You just need the curiosity to learn it and the interpersonal skills to talk about it and find our next opportunity. What You Will Do Master Client Relationships: Act as the primary point of contact for our key clients. Your main goal is to listen, understand their business bottlenecks, and build strong, lasting relationships. Manage the Client Journey: Ensure that clients have a smooth experience when working with us. You design the client journey, from initial contact and planning to final experiment and follow up. Work in the Testbed: To help you talk the talk, you will spend time hands-on in our testbed. You won't be expected to run complex physics experiments from the get-go, but you will coordinate the team to ensure that we deliver what we promise, on time and to the highest standards. Shape Our Offerings: Be the "voice of the client" internally. Take the feedback and insights you gather from client conversations and work with our team to package, price, and evolve our services to better fit the market. Discover New Markets: Look beyond our current scope. Network, investigate new industries, and find new client segments that could benefit from our technologies and solutions. What We Are Looking For To be successful in this role, your superpower must be communication and relationship building. We need someone with a solid engineering foundation, but we will teach you the specific quantum physics. You simply need to bring the commercial intuition. Exceptional Communicator: You are a people person who excels at active listening. You know how to ask the right questions to uncover a client's true needs and can build rapport with both technical and business stakeholders. Commercial Acumen: You have a natural instinct for business development. You understand how to spot opportunities, define value propositions, and help structure offerings that clients actually want to buy. Technical Curiosity: You aren't intimidated by complex technology. While we will train you, any prior exposure to or interest in fields like quantum computing, superconductivity, cryogenics, or microwave electronics is a fantastic bonus. Problem-Solving Mindset: You enjoy acting as a detective, gathering clues from client conversations and piecing them together into a coherent business strategy. General Qualifications MSc in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field (Recent graduates are highly encouraged to apply). 0-3 years of professional experience in technical sales, business development, engineering, consulting, or entrepreneurial endeavors. Fluency in English, oral and written. Swedish is a bonus. Excellent communication skills with a client-oriented mindset. Curiosity about science and technology. Why Join Us? This is a unique opportunity to launch your career and shape the commercial trajectory of advanced technologies without needing a Ph.D. You will be an independent, highly valued contributor who dictates how our technology meets the real world, supported by a team of technical experts ready to help you succeed. What We Offer The Forefront of Innovation: You will work directly at the intersection of deep tech research and real-world utilization, getting hands-on experience with technologies that are shaping the future. Autonomy & Trust: We believe in giving our team a high degree of freedom and responsibility. You will have the space to own your work and drive real impact. A Collaborative Culture: We foster an open, welcoming environment where new ideas are highly valued and cross-collaboration is the norm. Flexibility: We offer flexible working hours and the possibility of some work-from-home days to ensure a healthy work-life balance. About Chalmers Next Labs Chalmers Next Labs operates as a dynamic bridge between academia and industry. Working closely with Chalmers University of Technology, our mission is to ensure that excellent, cutting-edge research finds real-world applications that benefit society. We are a semi-commercial entity, meaning we go beyond pure academic research, but we aren't just a traditional sales organization either. We exist to build the commercial pathways that take advanced technologies out of the lab and into the market. How to Apply Please submit your CV and a cover letter explaining why you are the right fit for this role. Note: All applications must be submitted through our recruitment portal, ReachMee. Applications sent via email or other channels will not be considered. A background check will be performed before employment.
