Postdoctoral Researcher in High-Performance Computing

Responsibilities Are you a highly motivated researcher with a burning interest in HPC (high-performance computing) and a drive to solve complex scientific challenges? Do you thrive in an R&D environment where your ideas and the software you develop have a direct impact on cutting-edge research? We are seeking postdoctoral researchers as HPC software researchers at the Scientific Software Unit at KTH Center for Scientific Computing (KCSC). The position is funded by SSF within the SEESSI initiative, which aims to adapt Sweden's leading software in molecular dynamics, computational fluid mechanics, and quantum chemistry for next-generation hardware. You will be part of a project team of HPC software researchers at KCSC that collaborates closely with and creates tangible impact for three of Sweden's leading HPC codes: GROMACS (one of the world's most widely used software packages for molecular dynamics), Neko (a highly scalable framework for computational fluid mechanics that was nominated for the ACM Gordon Bell Prize in 2023), and VeloxChem (a versatile open-source software for quantum chemical calculations). As a postdoctoral researcher, your focus will be on developing innovative, technology-aware algorithmic methods directed toward these strategic software projects. Our goal is to go beyond traditional performance optimization; through an interdisciplinary approach, we further develop or redesign core algorithms for modern HPC architectures, with energy efficiency as a central design criterion. Key research objectives include: Mixed-precision algorithms: Design and implement formulations for core domain-specific computational kernels to leverage low-precision hardware without compromising simulation accuracy. Data-centric optimization: Design and implement communication schemes and data access strategies tailored for systems beyond exascale, for example via GPU-centric communication techniques. Collaboration and impact: We encourage you to publish your research and participate in leading international conferences. This gives you the opportunity to contribute directly to the core codebases and reach a global user community. Qualifications Requirements Completed doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made. Very good practical experience with software development in modern C++ and/or Fortran. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interaction with observations. Additionally, the department develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments. MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Centre, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is an international workplace, and more than half of the staff have backgrounds outside Sweden. More information about us can be found at www.su.se/department-of-meteorology. Project Description This research project investigates the bidirectional interactions between strong convection and large-scale atmospheric circulation. While synoptic flow patterns create environments that favor extensive strong convection, there is growing evidence that the latent heating associated with organized convection can in turn modify upper tropospheric flows and thereby affect the downstream development of the jet stream and the dynamics of Rossby waves. These feedback mechanisms may contribute to the emergence and persistence of weather events with significant societal consequences, such as atmospheric blocking and heat waves. Using targeted numerical experiments with the ICON model, the postdoctoral researcher will identify the causal mechanisms linking convection and large-scale circulation, and quantify the strength of these interactions. The project will also evaluate the importance of convection-scale feedbacks for global climate simulations and for the predictability of medium-range weather and seasonal forecasting. The project combines convection-permitting and large-scale numerical modeling, dynamical diagnostic methods, Lagrangian analysis, and statistical attribution to investigate atmospheric interactions across multiple scales. Simulations will be conducted on high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. Post-processing and analysis of model data will be primarily conducted in Python. Responsibilities Responsibilities include performing numerical simulations using ICON, processing and analyzing large atmospheric datasets using HPC, and developing and implementing analysis workflows for model results. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, present research results at international conferences and workshops, and mentor and support bachelor's and master's level students in their thesis work. Eligibility Requirements To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Selection Criteria The doctoral degree should be completed in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant field. It is a merit if the doctoral degree or equivalent was completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are particular reasons, an earlier completed degree can also be considered a merit. Particular reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or relevant practice/assignments for the field. Special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence within the field of employment. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate very good ability to express themselves orally and in writing in English, ability to work independently and take own initiative, and good collaboration skills. About the Position The position is full-time and is permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are particular reasons. To preserve the dynamics and expertise in our workplace, we strive to have employees with diverse backgrounds. Our office is located in central Stockholm. Wellness and Benefits We prioritize employees' health, security, and long-term development. You receive certain compensation for healthcare, extra support during parental leave, the possibility of salary exchange for pension, wellness benefits, occupational health services, and vacation that becomes more generous over the years. Financial Holdings As an employee at Riksgälden, you have an obligation to report your holdings of financial instruments, and owning shares in a bank requires special permission. Security-Classified Position As an employee at Riksgälden, you may be placed for wartime duty based on total defense needs.
