Associate Director, Packaging Technology Transfer Lead

As Associate Director, Packaging Tech Transfer Lead, you will drive the transfer of packaging technologies across AstraZeneca's diverse product portfolio, working with pioneering products and cross-functional teams around the world. Your role and accountabilities In this role, you will: Lead packaging technology transfers for vials, APFS, and autoinjector presentations across internal and external manufacturing sites. Own end-to-end transfer activities, including labelling, secondary packaging, device assembly, documentation, readiness, and implementation. Assess site capabilities and readiness, including equipment, process fit, capacity, technical maturity, materials, and operational risks. Develop robust transfer plans in collaboration with Technical Operations, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Regulatory, Device teams, Drug Product, Engineering, and external partners. Ensure GMP and regulatory compliance by embedding quality, risk management, and inspection readiness into transfer activities. Provide oversight of packaging process readiness, including line readiness, process validation considerations, comparability, material readiness, and transfer documentation. Support device and combination product transfers, considering the interfaces between the primary container, device components, assembly operations, packaging configuration, and market requirements. Consider drug product requirements and their impact on packaging configuration, handling, process conditions, product protection, and transfer strategy. Contribute to shipping qualification and distribution readiness, including transport validation, distribution conditions, and product protection requirements. Lead risk and issue management by identifying critical risks, defining mitigation plans, and calling out decisions when needed. Influence strategic decisions related to transfer approach, site selection, execution priorities, and risk management. Drive continuous improvement by simplifying, standardizing, and improving packaging transfer processes, governance, and ways of working. Champion digital enablement, including the use of Digital TT and other digital tools to improve visibility, data quality, knowledge management, and execution efficiency. Lead through a matrix organization, creating clarity, aligning stakeholders, and maintaining momentum across functions, sites, countries, and external partners. Essential requirements You will bring: Significant experience (typically 5-10 years) within CMC, pharmaceutical packaging, technology transfer, manufacturing science and technology, technical operations, or a related field, supported by a Bachelor's or equivalent in a relevant scientific or engineering field. Proven experience leading packaging technology transfers involving vials, APFS, autoinjectors, or similar presentations, with a strong understanding of labelling and packaging operations, device assembly where applicable, and associated transfer requirements. Strong technical knowledge of GMP, quality systems, regulatory expectations, and manufacturing environments, including line readiness, validation, change control, process performance, material flows, and operational risk management. Experience assessing manufacturing site capabilities and readiness, including technical fit, operational capacity, execution risk, and the successful planning and delivery of manufacturing transfers. A solid understanding of drug product considerations relevant to packaging transfers, including the relationship between formulation, primary packaging, process conditions, product protection, shipping qualification, and distribution requirements. Demonstrated leadership, influencing, and communication skills, with the ability to lead through ambiguity, engage stakeholders without direct authority, and explain complex topics to both technical and non-technical audiences. Strong collaboration skills and experience working across functions, cultures, geographies, and organizational boundaries to deliver business outcomes. An improvement attitude with the ability to simplify processes, develop scalable ways of working, and embrace digital tools and digital ways of working, particularly Digital TT. Desirable requirements Experience with combination products, biologics packaging, or other complex pharmaceutical product environments, including device-related manufacturing and assembly operations. Experience leading transfers across internal manufacturing sites and external contract manufacturing organizations, supporting global supply networks, product launches, and lifecycle change management. Experience working with Global CMC teams and translating CMC priorities into practical transfer plans, supported by experience using digital technology transfer tools or similar systems to manage transfer activities, data, actions, and documentation. Associate Director, Drug Product Technology Transfer CMC

Support new product introductions by ensuring that manufacturing requirements are considered early and that products are suitable for reliable, large-scale production. Develop transfer strategies and plans for aseptic drug product manufacturing, including liquid filling and lyophilisation. Assess manufacturing sites to determine whether they have the right equipment, capabilities, capacity, technical maturity and operational readiness. Coordinate cross-functional teams and work with internal stakeholders and external manufacturing partners to deliver transfer activities. Lead validation activities, including equipment qualification, process performance and the implementation of manufacturing changes. Handle technical risks related to the process, equipment, site, compliance and supply. Ensure appropriate documentation is in place, including transfer plans, risk assessments, validation documentation and knowledge-transfer materials. Represent Operations in technical and strategic decision-making, ensuring that solutions are practical and sustainable for commercial manufacturing. Support the handover to commercial operations, making sure that the receiving site has the required knowledge, documentation, training and process understanding. Drive continuous improvement by simplifying processes, improving standards and strengthening governance across the tech transfer organisation. As needed by business serve as the operations technical lead for early products You will be expected to balance technical depth with practical delivery. Success in this role will depend on your ability to make sound decisions and influence colleagues across functions and organisational boundaries. Essential requirements To be successful in this role, you will have: Significant experience in CMC matrix leadership, drug product manufacturing, technical transfer, MS&T or a related technical operations discipline within the pharmaceutical industry. Strong knowledge of drug product tech transfer, including planning, documentation, risk management, comparability and execution oversight. Experience with post-approval transfers and an understanding of the associated quality, regulatory, supply and operational requirements. Experience supporting new product introductions and representing Operations requirements in cross-functional teams. Technical expertise in aseptic manufacturing, including contamination control, process controls and manufacturing execution. Strong knowledge of liquid filling and lyophilisation, including process understanding and manufacturing considerations relevant to transfer and scale-up. A sound understanding of validation, including equipment qualification, process validation, process performance and change implementation. Experience assessing manufacturing site capabilities, including technical fit, readiness, compliance and transfer risk. Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively with technical, operational and senior partners. The ability to lead through influence, align teams and deliver results without relying on direct line management. A Bachelor's, Master's or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemistry, Life Sciences or a related field. 5-10 years of relevant experience in drug product manufacturing, technical transfer, MS&T, aseptic processing or related pharmaceutical development and supply roles. Desirable requirements It would be advantageous if you also have experience working across internal manufacturing sites, external partners, and contract manufacturing organisations, with a strong understanding of lifecycle management and post-approval changes in commercial manufacturing environments. Experience driving or supporting digital tech transfer, knowledge-transfer tools, or other digital solutions within technical operations is also valued. We are looking for someone who has successfully collaborated across development, manufacturing, quality, regulatory, and engineering functions, and who has contributed to improving, standardising, or simplifying tech transfer processes across sites or business areas.
