The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them. The Institute is composed of the following four departments: The Department of Infectious Diseases The Department of Microbiology and Immunology The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology The Department of Laboratory Medicine At present, the institute has about 340 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets. Salivary gland tumors are a heterogeneous group of tumors originating in the salivary glands of the head and neck region. The prognosis for patients with malignant salivary gland tumors is typically very poor, as there are no effective treatments for recurrent or metastatic disease. The treatments currently used (surgery and radiation therapy) are also often disfiguring from both a functional and aesthetic perspective. The research group has extensive experience studying salivary gland tumors and has identified several driving genomic alterations in these tumors. Duties We are looking for a researcher to help develop a new targeted treatment for salivary gland tumors. As part of the project, the researcher will plan, design, and conduct research that includes, among other things, the culture of primary/short-term-cultured tumor cells in 2D and 3D models, drug treatment/screening, proliferation/apoptosis/spheroid assays, quantitative PCR, RNA-seq, and immunoblot analysis. The duties also include project management, supervision, and written and oral reporting of research data. Qualifications A Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., biomedicine or molecular biology) is required. Postdoctoral research experience in the field is preferred. Previous experience with cell-based assays, in vitro drug treatment, and the culture of salivary gland tumor cells is highly preferred. The position requires a high degree of precision, independence, and initiative. Applicants should also possess strong collaborative skills and a problem-solving mindset. Responsibilities The Research Associate will work with documentation, coordination, and analysis of data from our clinical biomarker studies and some administrative tasks related to the research group's operations. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop their own research projects and actively engage in research communication both to the general public and through scientific articles and presentations. Qualifications Essential criteria: To qualify as a Research Associate for this position, the applicant should: Hold a relevant bachelor's or master's degree in medicine, neuroscience, biology, psychology, statistics, or similar. Academic Meetings & Housing is the section within the Service Unit that works with university conferences and events as well as administration and rental of student and researcher housing. Responsibilities Identify and characterize bacterial enzymes that metabolize phenylalanine and investigate how their structure affects enzyme activity and substrate specificity. The successful candidate will clone and express genes for selected enzymes and determine their enzyme kinetics and biochemical properties. The Department of Global Studies (IGS) at Gothenburg University seeks a full-time researcher for two months within the field of peace and development research. The position is part of a research project led by Camilla Orjuela entitled: People, Places, and War Plunder: Returning Looted Cultural Heritage in a Changing World. Project Description During colonial conquests, many cultural objects were plundered and taken to Western museums and collections. When colonies became independent, former colonial powers retained the objects. During the colonial period, and especially after independence, many people also moved from formerly colonized countries to wealthier nations. In recent years, a debate over the return of cultural treasures has intensified. Many museums have begun processes to return objects, while other institutions and political leaders reject these demands. This project examines how people in the diaspora engage in the debate over looted cultural objects and how their identity both shapes and is shaped by this discussion. The project focuses on diasporas from Nigeria, Ethiopia, and India, as well as looted objects from these countries, particularly the Benin Bronzes, the Maqdala Treasures, and the Koh-i-Noor Diamond. The project seeks answers to what these objects mean to people in the diaspora, how they view and engage in the question of return, and how the debate over returns creates, reshapes—and challenges—different identities and perceptions of the objects and the ongoing effects of historical injustices. Job Responsibilities As a researcher, you will work with the Ethiopian case and complete work on how the Ethiopian diaspora engages with and views looted cultural objects and the return debate. The work includes analysis of collected data and academic and popular science writing. Other tasks that contribute to the project's implementation may also occur. Subject area Bioinformatics and Cancer Genetics Subject area description Somatic mutation accumulation and clonal evolution are central processes in cancer development. Through large-scale whole-genome sequencing and other high-throughput approaches, these processes can be mapped in detail, providing insights into tumor initiation, progression, and treatment response. This position focuses on the application and development of bioinformatics methods for the analysis of genomic cancer data, including large public international datasets and locally generated patient-derived sequencing data. The project may involve, for example, studies of somatic mutational processes, clonal dynamics, tumor evolutionary history, or integrative analyses of genomic and clinical data. Analyses of non-cancer-related sequencing data may also be considered. The work will be carried out in a research environment with strong expertise in cancer genomics, computational biology, and translational research. Duties The postdoctoral researcher will apply and develop computational methods for the analysis of whole-genome sequencing and other NGS-based data from patients, including mutation calling and detection of mosaic mutations. The work may also include statistical analyses and data visualization to identify and interpret somatic mutational patterns and other genomic alterations, as well as integration of genomic data with clinical and phenotypic variables when relevant. The researcher is expected to contribute to manuscript writing and publication in international scientific journals and may present research findings at national and international conferences.
