Postdoctoral Researcher in Strong Convection and Large-Scale Atmospheric Dynamics

The Department of Meteorology at Stockholm University (MISU) conducts research and education spanning the atmosphere, ocean, and physically-based climate science. We offer educational programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. Our research seeks answers to fundamental questions about the dynamic, physical, chemical, and biogeochemical properties of the atmosphere and oceans that are relevant to weather and climate. Research activities are broad and encompass processes ranging from the deep ocean to the upper atmosphere, and from the tropics to the poles. We utilize and develop theory, statistical methods, and numerical models in close interaction with observations. Additionally, the department develops and leads observation-based research supported by satellites, Arctic icebreaker expeditions, and land-based instruments. MISU is part of a larger research environment at the university, including the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Baltic Sea Centre, and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre. The department is an international workplace, and more than half of the staff have backgrounds outside Sweden. More information about us can be found at www.su.se/department-of-meteorology. Project Description This research project investigates the bidirectional interactions between strong convection and large-scale atmospheric circulation. While synoptic flow patterns create environments that favor extensive strong convection, there is growing evidence that the latent heating associated with organized convection can in turn modify upper tropospheric flows and thereby affect the downstream development of the jet stream and the dynamics of Rossby waves. These feedback mechanisms may contribute to the emergence and persistence of weather events with significant societal consequences, such as atmospheric blocking and heat waves. Using targeted numerical experiments with the ICON model, the postdoctoral researcher will identify the causal mechanisms linking convection and large-scale circulation, and quantify the strength of these interactions. The project will also evaluate the importance of convection-scale feedbacks for global climate simulations and for the predictability of medium-range weather and seasonal forecasting. The project combines convection-permitting and large-scale numerical modeling, dynamical diagnostic methods, Lagrangian analysis, and statistical attribution to investigate atmospheric interactions across multiple scales. Simulations will be conducted on high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. Post-processing and analysis of model data will be primarily conducted in Python. Responsibilities Responsibilities include performing numerical simulations using ICON, processing and analyzing large atmospheric datasets using HPC, and developing and implementing analysis workflows for model results. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals, present research results at international conferences and workshops, and mentor and support bachelor's and master's level students in their thesis work. Eligibility Requirements To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a relevant doctoral degree. The degree must be completed by the time the employment decision is made. Selection Criteria The doctoral degree should be completed in meteorology, atmospheric science, oceanography, or another relevant field. It is a merit if the doctoral degree or equivalent was completed no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are particular reasons, an earlier completed degree can also be considered a merit. Particular reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade union organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or relevant practice/assignments for the field. Special emphasis will be placed on scientific competence within the field of employment. Applicants are also expected to demonstrate very good ability to express themselves orally and in writing in English, ability to work independently and take own initiative, and good collaboration skills. About the Position The position is full-time and is permanent, but for a minimum of two years and a maximum of three years, with the possibility of extension if there are particular reasons. Start date January 1, 2027, or by agreement. The start date can be brought forward but not delayed. Stockholm University is committed to being a workplace free from discrimination and providing equal rights and opportunities for all. Contact Information about the position is provided by Assistant Lecturer Monika Feldmann, [email protected]. Information about the recruitment process and employment conditions is provided by Administrative Director Sara Engström, [email protected]. Application You apply for the position via Stockholm University's recruitment system. Attach a cover letter and CV as well as any attachments requested in the application form. As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete and submitted to the university by the application deadline. PhD Student in Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Are you ready to take the next step in your academic journey? As a PhD student with us, you will work closely with leading researchers in a strong and international research environment, with access to advanced laboratory equipment and good funding opportunities. You are offered a secure position, high-quality supervision, and room to grow, both as a researcher and as a person. Would you like to conduct research close to one of Sweden's most strategic industrial initiatives – and together with researchers and colleagues at SSAB contribute to the transition to fossil-free steel? Then you will become part of a team that collectively works on a unique transformation project. As a PhD student, you will have a central role in the collaboration between the research group and SSAB and can continuously contribute to improving practice, while developing your competence in driving change. You qualify for both a continued research career and sought-after positions in industry. Subject Description Entrepreneurship and innovation encompasses organizational development with a special focus on business development based on innovative products, services, production solutions, or ways of leading and organizing operations. Project Description The project is carried out in close collaboration with SSAB and focuses on how established production systems in Nordic base industry can develop capacity for large-scale transition to green steel. You will be part of a joint team with researchers and representatives from SSAB who together develop knowledge and drive the work forward. The transformation involves not only technological change, but also requires new ways of working, leadership practices, and forms of organization that prepare operations for new processes, requirements, and business logics. The project is expected to contribute to the research frontier within entrepreneurship and innovation by developing knowledge about how entrepreneurial ways of working can be institutionalized in established industrial systems during structural transition. At the same time, the project contributes empirically grounded knowledge about how Nordic production can be developed to meet the requirements for sustainable and competitive production of green steel. Responsibilities A PhD student position involves both theoretical and practical work. As a PhD student, you are a central link between the research group and SSAB: you capture the organization's questions and ensure that knowledge and experiences flow between the parties. An important part of the work is to regularly be on site at SSAB's operations, follow the transformation work, and continuously collect data through, for example, observations and interviews. You work closely with the project team while driving your dissertation work. You are trained in scientific work by publishing articles and participating in national and international conferences, taking PhD courses, and may also have the opportunity to try the teaching role. Qualifications We are looking for an analytically strong and curious person with good methodological competence and a genuine interest in how innovation and entrepreneurial leadership function in industrial organizations. You thrive at the intersection of academia and business, take responsibility for your own tasks, and actively contribute to a team. The role requires that you can build trust in different professional contexts and feel comfortable regularly working in an industrial operation. Experience from process industry is a merit. You are motivated by combining theoretical depth with practical relevance and want to contribute to both scientific development and industrial transition. As a person, you are persistent, structured, and comfortable working in complex environments where different perspectives meet. You have a well-developed ability to express yourself both verbally and in writing in both Swedish and English. Knowledge of Finnish is a merit since SSAB also conducts operations in Finland. Basic eligibility for education at the research level is held by those who have 1. completed a degree at an advanced level, 2. completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at an advanced level, or 3. in some other way within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. In addition to basic eligibility, knowledge within business economics, industrial economics, management, or related fields is required. https://www.ltu.se/forskning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/forskningsamnen-och-allmanna-studieplaner/humanistiskt-samhallsvetenskapligt-omrade-allmanna-studieplanerInformation Employment as a PhD student is time-limited for 4 years; teaching and other institutional service may add up to 20% of full-time.
