Job description As a PhD student at the newly established Department of Legal Science, you will have an important active role in building the research environment. PhD students actively participate in national and international research activities. The employee is expected to have high presence at the workplace. Doctoral education in Legal Science comprises 240 higher education credits, corresponding to four years of full-time study. The education concludes with the PhD student defending their doctoral dissertation at a public disputation. The person employed as a PhD student shall dedicate themselves to their own doctoral education. Provisions concerning employment as a PhD student are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Sections 1-7. As part of the doctoral education, the PhD student shall complete necessary courses according to agreement with their supervisors. Participation in national and international courses and conferences is encouraged and supported. The Higher Education Ordinance stipulates that a person employed as a PhD student shall primarily dedicate themselves to their own education. However, a PhD student may, to a limited extent, work with teaching and administration. Such work shall not exceed 20% of full-time work before the doctoral degree is completed. Eligibility requirements To be eligible as a doctoral student, both general and specific eligibility must be fulfilled. In accordance with Chapter 7, § 35 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), it is also required that the applicant is assessed to have the ability needed to benefit from the education. General eligibility is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). Specific eligibility for admission to doctoral education in Legal Science for a doctoral or licentiate degree is held by those who have a law degree, candidate of law degree, or a master's degree in legal science, or have a master's degree and have completed an independent work at an advanced level of at least 15 higher education credits within legal science, while having the necessary language skills required by the education. Specific eligibility is also held by those who can invoke other completed education or special professional experience, if the education and/or professional experience is assessed to provide competence in the subject of doctoral education equivalent to the education specified above. Duties The duties include primarily leading and conducting research and carrying out investigations within disaster medicine with a focus on prehospital care in disaster areas characterized by complex conditions. This includes acquiring knowledge and experience as well as developing methods and treatments used in prehospital health and medical care's acute management of the injured. This may involve special acute measures required because the disaster area is geographically remote or difficult to access for other reasons, during severe weather conditions, during certain types of transports, and in case of threat or risk of spreading of CBRN substances. The work includes medical responsibility in the development and creation of educational materials within the field. Administrative duties and some teaching may also be included. Project Description The Streuff group is internationally recognized for developing innovative synthesis methods, particularly in the field of early transition metal catalysis. The project focuses on investigating and developing single-electron transfer reactions with low-valent titanium catalysis and related reagents/catalysts. Additional projects in areas such as new bond cleavage and defunctionalization reactions, clarification of reaction mechanisms in catalysis, and total synthesis are also available and can be discussed at a later stage. Duties The primary responsibility of a doctoral student is to pursue doctoral studies, which includes both participation in research projects and doctoral coursework. The duties may also include teaching and other departmental work, but not exceeding 20% of working time. Duties You will contribute to the project's petrophysical and geophysical research and to the development of an integrated methodology for graphite exploration. The work includes planning and conducting laboratory-based petrophysical investigations, analysis of seismic data and rock structure, and integrating results with geological, mineralogical and structural geological information from the project and related collaborations. The position involves interpreting the relationships between rock properties, deformation, metamorphic conditions and geophysical response, as well as evaluating how laboratory measurements can be used to constrain and interpret seismic observations at field scale. You will also contribute to developing and validating transferable methods for exploration screening, assessment of target areas and decision support in collaboration with academic and industrial partners. PhD Student in Mathematics with Focus on Combinatorics, Group Theory, and Geometry

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics is announcing a fully funded PhD position in mathematics with a focus on combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. The position comprises four years of doctoral education including participation in research projects and doctoral courses. The application deadline is July 18, 2026. Project Description and Responsibilities The PhD student will conduct theoretical research at the intersection of combinatorics, group theory, and geometry. We will investigate questions about rigidity and motion in non-classical geometries using combinatorial, algebraic, and group-theoretic methods, inspired by the mathematical theory of articulated systems and constraint geometry. Possible tools include combinatorics, algebraic methods, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, and rigidity theory, depending on the selected PhD student's background and interests. The project's exact direction will be developed together with the selected PhD student, who will have significant freedom to influence the research within the project's overarching mathematical framework. The selected PhD student will become part of an active research environment in discrete mathematics, geometry, and group theory at Umeå University, with opportunities to interact with researchers active in combinatorics, geometry, group theory, and related areas. The project is integrated into an international network of research collaborations and offers opportunities for conference travel, research visits, and scientific exchange. Qualifications The PhD student will be admitted to doctoral studies in mathematics. Basic eligibility is held by those who have completed a degree at advanced level, fulfilled course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or in some other way within or outside the country acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. To meet the requirement for special eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in mathematics, the applicant must have at least 60 hp within the field of mathematics, of which at least 15 hp at advanced level. The requirements for prior knowledge stated above are also considered met by those who in another manner acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. Good ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, is required. Experience in combinatorics, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, algebraic methods, and/or rigidity theory is meriting but not required for the position. As a PhD student, you are expected to take an active role in the project and in the department's activities. You are expected to have a scientific approach and good collaboration skills while being able to work independently. You should have a strong drive to continuously develop your knowledge and to develop into an independent researcher.
