1-2 PhD Students in Cultural Geography/Economic Geography

Job Responsibilities: The holder of a PhD student position is expected to actively participate in the department's research and teaching environment and may need to perform departmental duties, primarily teaching, amounting to approximately 20 percent of full-time work. The PhD student(s) will be employed within the DECENT project (Socio-technical modularity and the decentralization of infrastructure), financed by the ERC: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101219042. Cities have long relied on centralized systems to provide critical public services such as electricity, water, and transportation. These large-scale network-based infrastructures often fail to meet social, economic, and environmental needs. The DECENT project aims to investigate how decentralized infrastructure solutions – such as microgrids, small-scale wastewater treatment, multimodal transport, short food supply chains, or distributed finance – overcome the historical legacies of large-scale infrastructure systems and deliver public services in more modular ways. The PhD students will study decentralization from a configurational socio-technical perspective, focusing on aspects such as: local and global industry dynamics, geography of innovation, sustainable transitions, and/or urban experimentation. Empirically, the project will study and compare infrastructure decentralization in high-income cities (e.g., European or North American) and middle-income cities (e.g., South or Southeast Asian). The PhD students are expected to: Design and conduct empirical research on infrastructure decentralization within various sectors (e.g., water, mobility, or food) and geographical contexts, in collaboration with the project team; Write sole-authored and co-authored scientific publications during employment; Work closely with the project team and contribute to joint meetings and activities; Present their research at national and international conferences; Write and defend a doctoral dissertation. Eligibility/Qualification Requirements: To be eligible for doctoral education, an applicant must: Have completed a degree at advanced level; or Have completed studies equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level; or Have acquired comparable education in another way in Sweden or abroad. In addition to the requirements described above, specific eligibility requirements for doctoral education in cultural geography are a master's degree in cultural geography/economic geography or another relevant field (e.g., transition studies, innovation studies, sociology, economics, economic history, political science). The degree must include an independent thesis of at least 30 higher education credits, of which at least half at advanced level. Applicants must also have the ability to express themselves well orally and in writing in English. Assessment is made according to national guidelines. Employment of PhD students is regulated in the Statute Book 1998:80. Only those who are or have been admitted to doctoral education may be employed as PhD students. When appointing such a position, the student's ability to benefit from doctoral education shall be the primary consideration. In addition to pursuing their studies, those appointed to a PhD student position may be required to work with teaching duties, research, and administration, according to special provisions in the regulations. Assessment Criteria: In accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, Section 5, particular weight shall be placed on the applicant's ability to successfully complete doctoral education, as evidenced by academic qualifications and merits. We are seeking candidates who have: Strong motivation for academic research and curiosity about societal transitions; A background in economic geography, transition studies, innovation studies, sociology, economics, economic history, political science, or related fields; Experience working with empirical data collection and analysis (qualitative or quantitative) and an interest in working with mixed methods approaches; A strong interest in interdisciplinary approaches that bridge transition studies and economic geography; Excellent writing skills; The ability to express themselves well orally and in writing in English. Application: A personal letter of no more than 300 words containing a brief presentation of yourself as an applicant and your qualifications in relation to the project described above. The personal letter should begin with 2–5 bullet points highlighting your most important qualifications. Uploaded as a single PDF file. A document describing a research idea related to the theme of the DECENT project (as described above). Uploaded as a single PDF file. This should be regarded as a work sample and an indication of conceptual and empirical interest – not as a binding commitment to conduct the described research. The document should consist of the following sections: - Societal Relevance (max 200 words excluding references) - Scientific Relevance/Research Gap (with references to key studies) (max 200 words excluding references) - Conceptual Approach (with references to key studies) (max 200 words excluding references) - Methodological Approach and Preliminary Cases (max 200 words excluding references) - Potential Contribution (max 200 words excluding references) Curriculum Vitae. Uploaded as a single PDF file. An example of independently authored academic work. This is typically a master's thesis. Uploaded as a single PDF file. If available, copies of scientific publications you have authored or co-authored. Uploaded as a single PDF file. Names and contact information for 2–3 persons we may contact for personal references (provided in the text field). Copies of certificates, degrees, and grades. Uploaded as a single PDF file. The degree certificate is uploaded as a separate PDF file named "degree certificate." The application must be in English and submitted electronically through Lund University's application portal. Terms: Fixed-term employment for four years according to HF Chapter 5, Section 7.

PhD Student in Practical Philosophy in the DEMCAMP Project

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked among the world's leading academic institutions. We have approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 staff members in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our mission to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's living conditions. About the Education DEMCAMP investigates how applied ethics can contribute to understanding and addressing the vulnerabilities that refugees experience in refugee camps in the Global South. The project develops a normative theory of democracy that can respond to the economic, legal, and political systems that emerge in the camps. Within the project, the doctoral student will write a thesis on the democratization of humanitarian organizations and their role in refugee camps, particularly organizations such as UNHCR. "Democratization of Refugee Camps" (DEMCAMP) is a project funded by the Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant, via the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. The research leader of the project is Felix Bender. DEMCAMP asks what applied ethics has to say about the many refugees who do not live in the Global North but remain in the Global South and, more specifically, in refugee camps. The project investigates how we can understand and adequately respond to the vulnerabilities that refugees experience in camps. The project develops 1) a theory that better captures the vulnerabilities that refugees experience in refugee camps and 2) a normative democratic theory that can address these vulnerabilities. DEMCAMP shows that in refugee camps we can observe the emergence of economic, legal, and political systems that each function according to their own rules and logics, leading to refugees experiencing a set of vulnerabilities that remain invisible if refugee vulnerability is defined externally by humanitarian organizations, such as UNHCR, and only then applied to refugee camps. To adequately respond to the vulnerabilities that refugees experience, refugee camps need to be democratized. For more information about the project, please visit https://startinggrant.se/researcher/felix-bender/. The doctoral student will work on the democratization of humanitarian organizations and collaborate with the project leader (PI) on the roles that humanitarian organizations should play in refugee camps with a democratic structure. Project Assistants Sought for Research Project

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked as one of the world's leading academic institutions. Here are approximately 46,000 students and 8,500 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We are united in our commitment to understand, explain, and improve our world and people's conditions. We are now seeking six project assistants for the project "Navigating Legal Problems Without Law" The Research Project Studies on access to justice indicate that people living under uncertain circumstances refrain from using the law to solve their legal problems. Instead, they "do nothing." This phenomenon means that legal problems are handled outside conventional legal channels. Despite extensive literature on this topic, there is limited research on how and why individuals, according to their own narratives, handle legal matters outside legal systems. The research project investigates the following research questions: How do people practice and understand "doing nothing" when dealing with legal problems? What can the practice of "doing nothing" teach us about the relevance of formal legislation in legal strategies among people in precarious living conditions? The research project examines these questions in a marginalized residential area in Sweden. The research project offers a new bottom-up method for investigating access to legal proceedings and conflict resolution, and challenges existing paradigms about how and why individuals in vulnerable situations handle the law. Duties The primary task is to organize and conduct at least 20 qualitative interviews relevant to the project, transcribe, translate (if necessary), and participate in the coding and analysis of these interviews. Before the interviews, project assistants will receive thorough training in interview techniques and methodology, and throughout the employment, they will be guided by the project researchers. Research assistants will participate in meetings every other week and three full-day workshops during the employment. Working languages are either Arabic, Somali, or Dari, and Swedish/English. Qualifications Requirements Very good ability to express yourself orally in Arabic, Somali, or Dari Ability to translate Arabic, Somali, or Dari into Swedish or English Strong motivation and ability to work independently under time pressure Good collaboration and communication skills Meriting Factors Lived experience from so-called vulnerable areas University or college-level education Experience with qualitative interviews Outgoing and sociable Assessment Criteria In the appointment, primary attention shall be paid to the qualifications achieved as described above. Very good ability to express yourself orally is of great importance. Good collaboration and communication skills are also an assessment criterion, as are good knowledge of the languages in speech and writing. We strive to ensure diversity. Gender equality shall be considered in this employment. Application The application should include an introductory letter in Swedish or English, not exceeding 1,000 words, containing a brief presentation of yourself as an applicant and your qualifications, as well as a brief description of why you are interested in being a research assistant at the Sociology of Law Department, Lund University; a CV in Swedish or English any diplomas and grades in Swedish or English; names and contact information for two references; any other documents that you as an applicant wish to submit for this position. Applicants will be evaluated on the above points, and top-ranked candidates will be invited for interviews. Employment Terms Fixed-term employment, four months at 50% of a full-time position. Start date October 2, 2026. Other Information For questions about the recruitment process, contact Anna Melin at [email protected]. For questions about the position, contact Ida Nafstad at [email protected] The Faculty of Social Sciences at Lund University is one of the country's leading knowledge centers for research and education in social and behavioral sciences.
