Europe is racing to regain ground in semiconductor technology, and chiplets – several small dies packaged together into one working system – are one of the keys. The hard part is not the dies, but the interconnects between them. We are looking for a PhD student to create those interconnects in a fully additive way: laser micromachining, selective metallisation and new photosensitive materials, without high-temperature sintering and with minimal material waste. The work is experimental, carried out in our own laboratories together with European industry. The EISLAB division at Luleå University of Technology conducts research in electronic systems design, sensor systems, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things and machine learning, and works on electronics from material and process to a finished, verified component. Project description E2PACKMAN is a €93.7 million European flagship project building the next generation of semiconductor packaging – the part of chip making that decides how small, fast and powerful electronics can get. You will join a team that works with 60 partners from 13 countries, including Europe's leading semiconductor manufacturers and research institutes, to develop new materials, equipment and processes and prove them out on real industrial use cases. Luleå University of Technology is in an expansive phase and is implementing an initiative to strengthen research and education in communication and computing systems, with a particular focus on algorithms, data structures, and advanced computational models. Communication and computing systems is a rapidly growing and evolving field that forms the foundation for today's and tomorrow's digital society. Developments in artificial intelligence, large-scale data management, and distributed systems place increasing demands on new ways to represent, process, and interpret information. To meet these challenges, research and education are required that combine classical computational models with new approaches to computation and representation, particularly in high-dimensional and complex data environments. The initiative is directly related to the university's computer science environment and offers good synergy opportunities with research groups in, among others, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber-physical systems, and data-intensive applications. We therefore see a focus on research and development of new methods for representation, processing, and analysis of complex information as important. These methods range from basic research at the methodology level, such as algorithm development and models for efficient information representation, to applied research in collaboration with other groups. Field Description The field encompasses research related to integrated development and management of reliable network architectures, resource-efficient algorithms, and programming paradigms that work together to create reliability properties in selected applications. Project Description You will work on an exciting research project whose overarching goal is to develop new algorithms for reasoning and hybrid AI systems. The project focuses on methods that combine data-driven models with symbolic, structured, or knowledge-based representations to create AI systems that are more robust, interpretable, and adaptable. In your work, you will conduct research on algorithms for representation, learning, and reasoning in modern AI systems. This includes developing methods for linking learned representations to concepts and relationships, integrating context into learning processes, and designing new forms of inductive bias that support generalization and explainability. The project may also include algorithms and models suitable for efficient implementation on resource-constrained platforms, such as edge devices and new AI-adapted computer architectures. Responsibilities As a PhD candidate, you will have the following tasks: conduct research within the project area and participate in teaching activities. The position involves research within one of the most important subjects in computer science. As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to research and publishing activities and collaborate within the framework of the field's broad industrial and academic contact network through national and international collaborative projects. Qualifications To be eligible for employment as a PhD candidate, a Master's degree in Computer Science with a focus on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence or an equivalent foreign degree in the field is required. We are looking for a person with the following qualifications: - Master's level knowledge in machine learning and artificial intelligence. - Strong programming skills (Python, Matlab, AI frameworks). Participation in programming competitions is definitely a merit. - Solid mathematics knowledge at university level (probability theory, statistics, calculus, geometry, Fourier transform).
