The research subject Building Materials (https://www.ltu.se/forskning/forskningsamnen/byggmaterial) consists of 15 people. The subject focuses on developing sustainable materials and production technologies for the construction industry, as well as research and education related to ice and arctic conditions.
Subject Description
Building Materials includes sustainable building materials and their application, recycling and reuse, as well as applied building physics, with particular focus on arctic conditions.
Project Description
This research investigates how mining waste, such as enrichment sand and waste rock, can be reused rather than deposited in landfills. Sweden, one of Europe's largest metal producers, generates large volumes of such waste each year, which can create environmental problems due to its reactive nature. This project aims to develop innovative ways to reuse this material in cement-based products, contributing to reducing environmental impact and supporting more sustainable and resource-efficient mining.
Responsibilities
As a PhD student, you are expected to perform both experimental and theoretical work within your research studies and communicate your results at national and international conferences as well as in scientific journals. Tasks include laboratory testing, data analysis, and modeling.
Qualifications
To be eligible, you must have a master's degree in Materials Science or Chemistry. You should have basic knowledge of building materials and be fluent in English.
The following work or research experience is meritorious: experience with cement-based materials, XRD with Rietveld analysis, SEM, TG, DSC, micro-CT, particle size analysis, calorimetry, and experimental synchrotron measurement techniques. Knowledge of AI-based and machine learning methods is also meritorious.

Information
Employment as a PhD student is time-limited to 4 years; teaching and other institutional duties may be added up to 20% of full-time. Place of work: Luleå. Intended start date: as soon as possible but no later than January 1, 2027.
