Your responsibilities The Development Center is a consolidated function for legal supervision in criminal matters, legal development, and methodology development. Position Description The Department of Vehicle Engineering and Technical Acoustics at KTH is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the VR-funded research project SMILE (Soundscape engineering with Metamaterial Innovation and LEarning). SMILE develops methods for acoustic design that combine soundscape goals, acoustic metamaterials, physical modeling, inverse design, machine learning, and perceptual evaluation. Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries - Micromechanical Modeling of Cells
Job Responsibilities The next major leap in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept makes it possible to replace the highly flammable organic electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish state battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transportation sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions across multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis and cell manufacturing to characterization, modeling, and scaled production. The two-year postdoctoral project on Micromechanical Modeling and Mechanical Characterization of Contact, Interfaces, and Fracture in Solid-State Battery Cells is located at the Department of Engineering Mechanics (Division of Materials and Structural Mechanics) at the School of Engineering Science (SCI). In a solid-state cell, mechanics determines whether the cell functions: unlike a liquid electrolyte, a solid cell must build up and maintain every solid-solid contact under load, while ion insertion and extraction cause swelling and shrinkage, and interfaces between the active material, electrolyte, and current collector must maintain both adhesion and conductivity at the low stack pressures typical in real applications. The project develops a micromechanical modeling framework that resolves the cell at the particle and interface level and couples its mechanical state to its electrochemical performance, where interface delamination, fracture, and particle fragmentation are represented as the mechanisms that reshape the network of conductive contacts. The framework is validated against experimental data from COMPEL collaborations and delivers a design and operation map, including the cell's safe low-pressure window. The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute mechanical and structural characterization of materials and cells developed in the other projects. Qualifications Required A doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree in solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, computational mechanics, materials science, engineering physics, or a related field, with some experience in batteries or battery materials. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English, as required in daily work. Good skills in computation and numerical modeling, including finite element methods or multiphysics simulation and scientific programming. About the role As an Application Engineer, you will drive the technical development of customer application projects, from concept to series production, with responsibility for functionality and product quality. You will work closely with customers to translate their requirements into technical solutions, balancing performance, cost, quality, and manufacturability. You will collaborate across functions with Production, Project Management, and global specialist teams. The role also includes product improvements for components already in series production, with a focus on quality and cost. Based in Mjällby, Sweden, you will be part of the R&D organization and report to the Application Engineering Director. Your responsibilities As an Application Engineer, you will: Drive technical development, including design and validation, for one or several projects from concept to series production. Create and manage technical documentation, including CAD 3D/2D, BOM, DVP&R, DFMEA, and related documentation. Perform thermal performance calculations for product definition and validation. Work with global CAE teams to define and coordinate analysis and simulation needs. Coordinate engineering changes across functions through Engineering Change Management. Collaborate with customers and internal stakeholders to ensure solutions meet technical, quality, cost, and manufacturing requirements. Contribute to continuous improvement of products already in series production. Your profile We're looking for a proactive and solution-oriented engineer who enjoys taking ownership and driving technical development forward. To succeed in this role, you have: A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent experience. Preferably at least 3 years of experience in product development. Solid understanding of engineering design and product development processes. Experience with CAD and 3D modelling, preferably CATIA V5 or similar. Knowledge of engineering drawings and GD&T. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken. You are structured, communicative, and comfortable making decisions based on data and engineering judgment. You enjoy working cross-functionally and are able to make progress even when not all information is available from the outset. Considered as a plus Knowledge of heat transfer, structural analysis, or vibration. Experience with CFD/FEA or other simulation-driven development. Experience working in global development teams. Experience from the automotive industry, preferably within heavy-duty applications.
