Postdoctoral Researcher in X-ray and Neutron Characterization of Metals in Additive Manufacturing
Responsibilities The Department of Materials Science is offering a postdoctoral position focused on in-situ and ex-situ synchrotron and neutron characterization of metallic materials processed using laser and electron beam techniques, particularly within additive manufacturing (AM), welding, and heat treatment. The position centers on a specially designed sample environment developed at the Swedish beamline at PETRA III, beamline P21.2, where both electron beam and laser processing can be studied in real-time under controlled conditions. The postdoctoral researcher will further develop the methodology for applying this experimental setup in close collaboration with internal and external partners, and will use it to generate new knowledge about metal behavior during rapid thermal cycles, such as those occurring in AM or laser welding. Beyond synchrotron experiments, the position will include work with complementary characterization methods to create a comprehensive understanding of microstructural evolution and mechanical properties. Through a combination of advanced in-situ studies and ex-situ analyses, the project aims to deepen understanding of phase transformations, melt pool dynamics, solidification, and properties of processed materials in end-use applications, for example by studying their behavior under quasistatic or cyclic loading. This research is central to enabling the development of new materials and process solutions that can support sustainable industrial development, for example in manufacturing or energy production. The results generated will be important for developing circular material flows where scrap is reduced and recycled raw materials can be used more frequently. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at large-scale research infrastructure, develop measurement methodologies and data analysis for real-time studies, and collaborate closely with both academic and industrial partners, nationally and internationally, to address important material and process questions. Research experience in characterization within materials science, particularly synchrotron and neutron characterization such as diffraction, small-angle scattering (WAXS, SAXS, ND, SANS, etc.), and imaging, demonstrated through a portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and international conference presentations. Ability to express yourself very well in English, both spoken and written, as this will be required in daily work. You are self-driven with a strong ability to take initiative and drive projects. As a person, you have well-developed analytical and problem-solving abilities and enjoy taking responsibility. You have strong collaborative skills, including the ability to lead and support research. Meritorious At the application deadline, no more than three years since obtaining your PhD or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a PhD. Extensive experience with data analysis for synchrotron or neutron characterization of metallic materials.
