Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment Third-cycle subject area Biology Description of the doctoral project Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. A key driver of AMR spread is the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes via conjugative plasmids — mobile genetic elements that move between bacteria. Plasmid-dependent phages (PDPs) are viruses that specifically infect bacteria carrying these plasmids, making them a potentially powerful but largely overlooked tool in controlling resistance gene transmission. This PhD project is part of ECOPHARM, a research project funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (Wallenberg Academy Fellows 2025) and is based at the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment, SLU Uppsala. The overarching aim of ECOPHARM is to decipher the mechanisms driving PDP interactions with conjugative plasmids and bacterial hosts, and to understand their impact on antibiotic resistance gene transmission in aquatic environments. As a PhD student, you will investigate the diversity, ecology, and functional interactions of plasmid-dependent phages in aquatic ecosystems. About the Position As an Assembly Manager, you are responsible for leading, developing, and optimizing operations within your area. You move geographically between current projects and serve as an important link between production and sales/project management. In this role, you lead and develop both work methods and processes as well as employees within the department. You actively work to steer operations toward established goals in delivery, quality, profitability, and capacity. You also take the initiative in planning, monitoring, and developing both production technology and logistics. You have an important role in creating efficient workflows and improving productivity and the work environment, with ongoing dialogue and coordination with production to ensure smooth implementation. The work also includes contributing to and ensuring quality in operations, including performing inspections and certifications according to applicable procedures. You are responsible for work environment efforts in the projects you lead, ensuring that legal requirements and guidelines are followed. You work proactively to reduce risks and ensure that both leaders and employees have the right conditions to work safely. Finally, you also review technical drawings and inspection plans in connection with projects and subcontracted work. Work as an Assembly Manager is varied, responsible, and independent.
