Postdoctoral Researcher in Freshwater Ecology and Climate Change
Department of Forest Ecology and Management Project Description: Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts, floods, heat waves, and storms. Small streams and their surrounding riparian zones are particularly vulnerable to these changes, especially in managed forests where streams are already impacted by forestry. Buffer zones along streams represent the primary forestry tool for reducing the impact of forest management on aquatic environments, but many buffer zones are inadequately designed to maintain important ecological functions, especially in a changing climate. The project addresses three interconnected research questions: 1) How climate-driven extreme events affect streams and riparian zones in managed forests. 2) Which characteristics of riparian zones best increase resilience and recovery capacity against such extreme events. 3) How scientific knowledge about riparian zones is translated into practical guidelines and policy instruments for climate adaptation in forestry. This is a time-limited knowledge synthesis project that integrates scientific and applied knowledge on climate-adapted management of riparian zones, with a focus on boreal and hemiboreal forest ecosystems. The project will compile and evaluate scientific literature, forestry guidelines, policy documents, and/or available data to produce scientific publications and other project outputs. About the Position The postdoctoral researcher will work within the CLIMRIP project (Climate-adapted riparian buffer management: a synthesis of boreal ecosystems and implications for practice), funded by Formas and led by principal investigator Associate Professor Lenka Kuglerová. The project team is interdisciplinary and includes expertise in hydrology, ecology, limnology, microclimate, and social science. The project also has support from the SLU Library. The postdoctoral researcher will also be part of the larger scientific network around the Krycklan Catchment Study. The postdoctoral researcher's primary task is to compile and synthesize knowledge related to the project's three main research questions. Work responsibilities include: Planning and conducting systematic literature reviews, rapid evidence reviews, meta-analyses, and/or evidence mapping of scientific literature on the effects of climate change on boreal streams and riparian zones, as well as on the design of climate-adapted riparian zones, Compiling and analyzing forestry guidelines and policy documents to evaluate how scientific knowledge about riparian zones is translated into practical forest management and policy, Leading the work of writing and publishing scientific articles based on the synthesis work, as well as contributing to other project deliverables, such as reports, Collaborating with the project team to integrate results from different disciplines and contribute to practical recommendations for climate-adapted forestry, Presenting project results at project meetings and scientific conferences. Your Background We seek an engaged and motivated postdoctoral researcher with a strong natural science background, particularly in freshwater ecology or related fields. The applicant should hold a PhD in natural science, for example in ecology, physical geography, forest science, or equivalent, preferably with a focus on freshwater ecology, limnology, or similar subject areas. We seek a candidate with demonstrated experience leading scientific publication processes and who can demonstrate a strong ability to publish scientific articles in English. Experience with literature reviews, meta-analyses, or other knowledge synthesis methods is meritable. The following experiences are also meritable: research in boreal ecosystems, research on the effects of climate change, knowledge of riparian zone management along watercourses, ability to read Swedish, experience working in interdisciplinary research projects. We place great emphasis on personal qualities. The applicant should be well-organized and structured, able to work independently and proactively, and have good collaboration and communication skills. This position is intended for a junior researcher, and we primarily seek individuals who completed their PhD no more than three years ago. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. Special reasons include leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within labor organizations, military service, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical practice or relevant practice/positions for the subject area. Substitute Bioinformatician for UPSC's Bioinformatics Platform
Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC, https://www.upsc.se), a center of excellence for experimental plant research and forest biotechnology in northern Sweden. UPSC aims to conduct excellent and innovative basic research and generate knowledge beneficial to forestry, agriculture, environment, and society. We study plants from the cellular level to ecophysiology, and from basic research to industrial applications. We seek to understand plants' ability to grow, adapt, and acclimate to a changing world—knowledge that can lead to better plant varieties, cultivation practices, or industrial processes. About the Position Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is a world leader in plant physiology and forest genetics, where research produces large amounts of data requiring bioinformatics resources and software for analysis. UPSC is a collaboration between Umeå University's Department of Physiological Botany and SLU's Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology. Until the end of 2026/2027, there is a university-wide infrastructure at SLU offering bioinformatics support: SLU Bioinformatics Infrastructure (SLUBI). As SLUBI is being phased out, a bioinformatics position will be established at UPSC's Bioinformatics Platform (UPSCb). UPSCb is part of the bioinformatics environment in Umeå, which is largely co-located with UPSC, with more than thirty people working for both local and national units (such as SciLifeLab NBIS). In your role at UPSC's Bioinformatics Platform (UPSCb), you will provide bioinformatics support and services to research groups and participate in various types of projects. The work involves managing multiple projects simultaneously. Projects are short-term (a few months) and often require close collaboration with biologists. To ensure that data analyses performed in the platform maintain high standards, you will participate in bioinformatics seminars every other week and be involved in platform study sessions once per week. The platform supports participation in courses and workshops for continuing education and is also involved in delivering such courses at local and national levels. You can expect to work on short, challenging projects in a supportive and dynamic work environment, and eventually take responsibility for analyzing multiple projects. Your Background We seek candidates with a doctoral degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, or equivalent. You should be well-versed in Unix/Linux and at least one programming language such as Python, R, C, or C++. You need excellent collaboration skills and very strong English proficiency. UPSC is an international environment, and the position requires strong ability to interact with biologists (UPSCb's primary user group). UPSCb also offers user support, sometimes over longer timeframes and on more extensive projects, making previous experience in mentoring and teaching meritorious. Since you will be an important part of UPSC's Bioinformatics Platform, a small unit with five employees, strong ability to independently organize and report work is required. You will work with other experts within the platform and in the bioinformatics environment who are often highly specialized in specific technologies such as RNA-Seq, metagenomics, or epigenetics. Therefore, experience in processing and integrating multi-omics data (for example, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) is meritorious. Population-related projects are also common, making experience with genome-wide association studies and eQTL mapping meritorious. About Us UPSC consists of two departments belonging to two universities: Umeå University (https://www.umu.se/) and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU; https://www.slu.se/). Approximately 200 people from more than 40 different nationalities work here. We have about 30 group leaders, and our researchers have access to state-of-the-art analytical platforms, unique resources for tree genomics, and plant cultivation facilities. We strive to create a work environment that promotes collaboration and supports our researchers throughout their careers, including through education and individual career guidance. Temporary Substitute Bioinformatician at the UPSC Bioinformatics Platform
Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology The Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC, https://www.upsc.se/) which is a centre of excellence for experimental plant research and forest biotechnology in Northern Sweden. Our mission is to perform excellent and innovative basic research and generate knowledge that benefits forestry, agriculture, environment and society. We work across a wide range of disciplines in plant science reaching from cell biology to ecophysiology and from basic research to industrial applications. Our common goal is to understand the plants' ability to grow, adapt and acclimate to a changing world and how we can breed better plants. About the Position The Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is a world-leading research center in plant physiology and forest genetics. Its research activities generate large volumes of data that require bioinformatics resources and software for analysis. UPSC is a collaboration between the Department of Plant Physiology at Umeå University and the Department of Forest Genetics and Plant Physiology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). Within SLU, a university-wide infrastructure currently provides bioinformatics support: the SLU Bioinformatics Infrastructure (SLUBI). As SLUBI will be phased out by the end of 2026, a bioinformatics position is being established within the UPSC Bioinformatics Platform (UPSCb). UPSCb is part of the broader bioinformatics environment in Umeå, most of which is co-located with UPSC, comprising more than thirty professionals working for both local and national organizations (for example, SciLifeLab NBIS). In your role within the UPSC Bioinformatics Platform (UPSCb), you will provide bioinformatics support and services to research groups and participate in a variety of projects. The position involves managing several projects simultaneously. Projects are typically short-term, lasting a few months, and often require close collaboration with biologists. To ensure that data analyses carried out within the platform maintain a high standard, you will participate in bioinformatics seminars every other week and take part in the platform's study sessions once a week. The platform supports participation in courses and workshops for professional development and is also involved in delivering such training at both local and national levels. You can expect to work on short, challenging projects in a supportive and dynamic work environment and, over time, take responsibility for the analysis of multiple research projects. Your Profile We are looking for candidates who hold a PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field. You should be highly familiar with Unix/Linux and at least one programming language such as Python, R, C, or C++. Strong collaboration skills and excellent English proficiency are required. UPSC is an international environment, and the position requires a strong ability to interact with biologists, who make up the primary user group of the UPSC Bioinformatics Platform (UPSCb). UPSCb also provides user support, in some cases over extended periods and for more comprehensive projects. Therefore, previous experience in supervision, mentoring, or teaching is considered an advantage. As you will be an important member of the UPSC Bioinformatics Platform, a small unit consisting of five employees, you must demonstrate a strong ability to independently organize, manage, and report your work. You will work alongside other experts within the platform and the broader bioinformatics community, who are often highly specialized in specific technologies such as RNA-Seq, metagenomics, or epigenetics. Therefore, experience in processing and integrating multi-omics data (for example genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics) is considered meritorious. Population-related projects are also common, making experience with whole-genome studies and eQTL mapping an additional advantage. About Us UPSC belongs to two universities, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Umeå University. About 200 people from more than 40 different nationalities work here. We host some 30 principal investigators, and our researchers have access to state-of-the-art analytical platforms, unique tree germplasm resources and plant growth facilities. We strive for a collaborative work environment and support our scientists throughout all career stages by providing professional training opportunities and individual career mentoring. Postdoctoral Fellow: Psychology, Forest Management, and Biological Diversity
Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology We are seeking an engaged and motivated postdoctoral researcher who wishes to participate in an interdisciplinary research collaboration between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Umeå University, and University of Massachusetts. As Sweden and the EU work toward ambitious goals for biological diversity and ecosystem restoration, understanding the human dimensions of forest management becomes increasingly important. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to research at the intersection of psychology, economics, and forestry, with the aim of supporting decision-making for more resilient and sustainable forest landscapes. The full job announcement can be found at: https://www.slu.se/om-slu/jobba-pa-slu/lediga-jobb/ About the position The EU's Nature Restoration Regulation and Sweden's environmental quality objectives place increasing demands for landscapes with greater biological diversity. In Sweden, approximately 300,000 individuals and families own about 50 percent of productive forest land, which covers roughly two-thirds of the country's area. These family forest owners will need to implement a large portion of the measures required to strengthen biological diversity in Sweden's forests. Within the framework of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation, we are investigating three central research questions: What prominent elements in family forest owners' cognitive models describe their perceptions of and assessment strategies regarding biological diversity in their own forest holdings? Do family forest owners have the ability, opportunities, and motivation to change their behavior toward forest management practices that enhance biological diversity? Can interventions offering economic compensation promote family forest owners' transition to forest management practices that enhance biological diversity? To address these questions, we are seeking a postdoctoral researcher who wishes to work with researchers in applied economics, psychology, and forest science. The selected candidate will contribute to integrating behavioral science perspectives and knowledge of natural resource management into relevant research designs, developing research questions, applying appropriate analytical methods, and writing scientific publications. The position is a full-time appointment for two years. An important task is to develop interview protocols for studies with family forest owners, support data collection, and lead analyses of the collected data. The position is based at SLU campus in Umeå. Your background Applicants must hold a doctoral degree obtained within the past three years in a relevant field, such as applied economics, cognitive science, psychology, or a strong interdisciplinary program. If there are special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. Applicants are expected to have excellent ability to communicate in English, both orally and in writing, and a clear motivation to pursue an academic career. The ability to work independently, take own initiatives, and collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary and international research environments is of great importance. Advantageous qualifications include documented ability to integrate behavioral science perspectives in research on decision-making, experience writing scientific manuscripts, and advanced and documented knowledge in R, Stata, or equivalent analytical software for statistical modeling. Good knowledge of Swedish and experience using surveys and/or interviews as data collection methods are also advantageous. About us The Department of Forest Bioeconomy and Technology at SLU brings together broad expertise in engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences.
