Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries - Micromechanical Modeling of Cells

Job Responsibilities The next major leap in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept makes it possible to replace the highly flammable organic electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish state battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transportation sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions across multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis and cell manufacturing to characterization, modeling, and scaled production. The two-year postdoctoral project on Micromechanical Modeling and Mechanical Characterization of Contact, Interfaces, and Fracture in Solid-State Battery Cells is located at the Department of Engineering Mechanics (Division of Materials and Structural Mechanics) at the School of Engineering Science (SCI). In a solid-state cell, mechanics determines whether the cell functions: unlike a liquid electrolyte, a solid cell must build up and maintain every solid-solid contact under load, while ion insertion and extraction cause swelling and shrinkage, and interfaces between the active material, electrolyte, and current collector must maintain both adhesion and conductivity at the low stack pressures typical in real applications. The project develops a micromechanical modeling framework that resolves the cell at the particle and interface level and couples its mechanical state to its electrochemical performance, where interface delamination, fracture, and particle fragmentation are represented as the mechanisms that reshape the network of conductive contacts. The framework is validated against experimental data from COMPEL collaborations and delivers a design and operation map, including the cell's safe low-pressure window. The postdoctoral researcher will also contribute mechanical and structural characterization of materials and cells developed in the other projects. Qualifications Required A doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree in solid mechanics, engineering mechanics, computational mechanics, materials science, engineering physics, or a related field, with some experience in batteries or battery materials. This qualification requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English, as required in daily work. Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries—Electrochemical and Chemical Characterization

Job Responsibilities The next major breakthrough in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept allows the flammable organic electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries to be replaced with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish national battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transport sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions across multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis and cell manufacturing to characterization, modeling, and scaled production. The two-year postdoctoral project: Electrochemical Properties of Solid-State Batteries and Analysis of Interactions Between Their Components will be divided between the Department of Chemical Engineering (Division of Applied Electrochemistry) and the Department of Chemistry (Division of Applied Physical Chemistry). The project will focus on electrochemical and chemical evaluation of components and cells made from materials produced by parallel postdoctoral projects within the initiative. The research aims to achieve a deeper understanding of the structure/performance relationship of the developed electrolytes and to study interactions and interfaces between electrode materials and electrolyte, conduction mechanisms, degradation, and the relationship between manufacturing processes and material properties. The analysis will be enabled by combining electrochemical methods, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, with techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), Raman, and in situ mass spectrometry (OLMS). Qualifications Requirements Completed doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree in electrochemistry, inorganic chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field with experience in electrochemistry. This qualification requirement must be met by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English as required for daily work. Good laboratory and instrument skills. Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality. Meritorious At the application deadline, no more than three years since completion of the doctoral degree or foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. Experience with solid-state batteries and well-versed in electrochemical characterization techniques. Practical experience with NMR spectroscopy and Raman. Demonstrated innovative thinking, creativity, and ability to work independently. Good collaboration skills and ability and interest in working as part of a team. We will place great emphasis on personal qualities. Become Part of KTH KTH shapes the future through education, research, and innovation. Postdoctoral Researcher in Solid-State Batteries – Precision Manufacturing

Job Responsibilities The next major breakthrough in battery development is expected to be lithium solid-state batteries (SSB). This concept makes it possible to replace the highly flammable organic electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries with a safer and more compact solid electrolyte. As part of the Swedish national battery initiative COMPEL, which aims to support competence and excellence in battery research and education for the transport sector, KTH is launching a coordinated initiative on composite-SSB with seven postdoctoral positions from multiple disciplines, focusing on different aspects along the battery value chain, from synthesis, cell manufacturing, characterization, modeling to scaled-up production. The two-year postdoctoral project: Scalable Production of Solid-State Batteries through Precision Manufacturing will be conducted at the Department of Production Development ITM. The project offers an opportunity to conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of precision manufacturing and metrology, production technology and digital manufacturing, applied to solid-state batteries. The aim is to investigate how high manufacturing precision can reduce process variations, minimize process-induced defects and increase robustness of the manufacturing process, and how variations arise and propagate throughout the entire manufacturing chain, from production equipment performance and component machining to cell assembly, and how these can be characterized, quantified and controlled. A central goal is to develop measurement-based methods that describe the relationship between manufacturing precision, process capability and product quality. Precision metrology and integrated quality control will be used to identify critical process parameters, analyze error sources and establish manufacturing tolerances that enable robust production. Advanced measurement and non-destructive testing methods, including optical and laser-based measurement techniques, industrial X-ray computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonic testing, will be used to monitor process stability and identify defects at various stages of the manufacturing process. The collected measurement data can be combined with process models and digital engineering tools to support tolerance analysis, process analysis and continuous improvement. The expected outcomes of the project are new methods to reduce manufacturing variations, improve process capability and enable reliable industrial scale-up of solid-state battery production. Qualifications Requirements Completed doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree, in systems engineering, mechanical engineering, production engineering, or a related field, with experience in manufacturing technology, precision manufacturing or industrial measurement technology. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment decision is made. Good knowledge of written and spoken English as required in daily work. Good theoretical and practical abilities. Awareness of diversity and equal treatment issues with particular focus on gender equality. Merits At the application deadline, no more than three years since obtaining the doctoral degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. Experience with solid-state batteries and good knowledge of battery manufacturing. Practical experience in precision manufacturing, measurement technology and quality control. Demonstrate an innovative mindset, creativity and ability to work independently. Good collaboration skills and ability and interest in working in a team.
