Department of Chemistry (Kemikum), with more than 200 employees, is one of the largest departments at Stockholm University. Research at the Department of Chemistry spans all areas of chemistry including analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic and structural chemistry, and organic chemistry. The research projects are diverse, ranging from theory to experiments, from basic research to more applied projects often with a focus on sustainable chemistry as well as advanced analytical methods for chemicals and materials. The Department of Chemistry has a well-developed research infrastructure with a range of equipment and qualified support from senior researchers. The Department of Chemistry also hosts undergraduate chemistry education and three master's programs: analytical chemistry, sustainable chemistry, and organic chemistry. Doctoral education is conducted within five areas: analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and organic chemistry. More information about us can be found at: Kemikum Project Description The position is linked to three research projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC; CIRCULIG), the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF; SUSLIG), and the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW; LIGNOLOOP). A common challenge for these projects is to develop advanced methods for analysis and visualization of lignin in various liquid and solid media. The successful candidate will join the research group Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM), which develops sustainable materials from industrial side streams with a particular focus on lignin. The research group consists of approximately 25 employees with broad expertise in chemistry, materials science, and chemical engineering, creating a strongly interdisciplinary and collaboration-oriented research environment. Responsibilities The primary responsibility is to conduct scientific research. The researcher will focus on advanced microscopy and development of analytical methods for lignin-containing materials. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to project management, scientific communication, and dissemination of research results through scientific publications, presentations, and other forms of research communication. Qualifications A researcher is employed primarily for research and must hold a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree. Evaluation Criteria Special weight will be placed on scientific excellence. The applicant should have documented experience in characterizing lignin using microscopy techniques and a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaboration-oriented research environment. Strong communication skills are required. Documented experience with synthesis, characterization, or application of lignin-based colloidal materials is a merit. Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken, are required. About the Position The position is full-time and limited to a maximum of 12 months. Start date September 2, 2026, or by agreement.
