For more information about the position https://liu.se/jobba-pa-liu/lediga-jobb/29877 Your responsibilities The purpose of the position as Assistant Professor is to give the instructor the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and to build credentials in both scientific and pedagogical areas to meet the requirements for a position as Professor. The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) is recruiting an Assistant Professor with a generous start package through https://wise-materials.org The recruitment package for this WISE Fellow includes (i) salary for the recruited faculty member (total of 4 years full-time, over a maximum of 5 years); (ii) funding for research/consumables; (iii) salary for two PhD students (4 years each); (iv) salary for two postdoctoral researchers (2 years each); and (v) additional support for overhead and facilities. At IFM, current development of solid-state quantum technologies is facilitated by our leading international role in semiconductor material growth with large band gaps (SiC, GaN, AlGaN and Ga2O3) and two-dimensional materials. In collaboration with experimental and theoretical divisions, we are currently seeking new defects in wide band gap materials with properties suitable for quantum technology. Furthermore, we have strong collaborations with groups at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY) at LiU that cover a broad spectrum of research in quantum communication, quantum information and quantum foundations. In a broader perspective, IFM has internationally leading researchers and several world-leading laboratories in materials science. Research areas span material synthesis and characterization, sustainability, components and applications, including thin films, nanoparticles, 2D-, 1D- and mesoporous materials, which are characterized in our state-of-the-art laboratories for structure and composition, down to the atomic level, using for example diffraction, spectroscopy and advanced microscopy. Key research and responsibility areas include one or more of the following: Material synthesis Deepen current activities in CVD growth of wide band gap semiconductors and/or 2D materials, or establish activities in materials and processes beyond current activities, for the development of quantum technologies (solid state). Material characterization Investigate the electronic, optical and magnetic (magneto-optical) properties of materials (qubits). Component manufacturing Use materials as qubits in quantum computing and related areas, such as single photon sources for secure quantum communication, and more. For complete job responsibilities, see link above! Your qualifications We are looking for someone who has a PhD or equivalent scientific expertise. Primarily, we are looking for someone who obtained their PhD within the last seven years. For this position, special emphasis will be placed on scientific skills and secondly on skills within specific expert areas (below). Regarding scientific skills, the following will be assessed: Required for the position is previous expertise and a proposed research program that complements and expands IFM's current research activities related to materials for quantum technologies Required for the position is a PhD in materials science, chemistry, applied physics or another relevant field Required for the position is postdoctoral or equivalent relevant experience Particularly meritorious is experience in leading research projects Particularly meritorious is experience in writing and publishing high quality/high impact scientific articles, especially as first or corresponding/last author Meritorious for the position is experience in participating in and coordinating national or international research activities Meritorious for the position is previously awarded research grants as principal or co-applicant Meritorious for the position is previous experience in coordinating research funding Regarding pedagogical skills, the following will be assessed: Particularly meritorious for the position is previous experience supervising master's students, PhD students and/or postdoctoral researchers Meritorious for the position is previous experience teaching at the master's or doctoral course level Meritorious for the position is previous experience in course planning and development of course materials Other skills that will be assessed for this position: Documented expertise in research collaboration Experience working in a large, internally collaborative research group Experience in establishing new laboratory activities Since teaching and research are conducted in English, you must be able to demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English.
