The Department of Environmental and Geographical Sciences (MGeo) conducts research and education on fundamental and applied questions regarding Earth's past, present, and future climate and environment, including human interaction with nature and consequences for human well-being. MGeo develops and applies cutting-edge methods, models, and techniques in environmental science, quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geographic information science, and computational science in environment and health to study processes ranging from the microscopic to the planetary across all time scales. Job Description The employee is expected to contribute to the institution's core activities in research, teaching, collaboration, and, where applicable, academic leadership tasks. The position involves research in geographic information science, with emphasis on technical aspects of GIS. The employee is expected to actively seek and obtain external research funding, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and contribute to the development of the institution's research environment, including interdisciplinary collaboration. Duties also include teaching at basic and advanced levels in geographic information systems (GIS), with particular focus on technically oriented courses such as geographic databases, Web GIS, GIS algorithms and data structures, geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), and collection and analysis of 3D geodata. The position includes course responsibility, course development, and participation in pedagogical development within the subject area. As part of collaboration efforts, the employee is expected to collaborate with the surrounding society, including authorities, industry, and other societal actors, and contribute to the application of GIS and geospatial technologies in relevant societal areas. Duties may also include participation in department and faculty-wide administrative and management-related tasks, such as committee work, program development, and coordination assignments. The distribution between research, teaching, collaboration, and administrative tasks follows the faculty's work time model, where teaching normally constitutes approximately 25-35% of full-time work, with the remaining time allocated to research, collaboration, and other tasks. The content, distribution, and scope of work tasks may change over time as operations develop, strategic priorities shift, and external conditions change. To support the building of a research group, resources equivalent to one doctoral student position will be linked to this position. Qualifications According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 4, Section 4), to be eligible for appointment as a university lecturer, an applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical skill and have completed a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence. For this position, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree in geographic information systems (GIS), geographic information science, geoinformatics, technical surveying, computer science, information systems, or in an equivalent or related subject area. The position requires higher education pedagogy training of at least five weeks or equivalent knowledge acquired in another way. In special cases, exceptions may be made from this requirement. Applicants lacking higher education pedagogy training must complete such training within two years from the start of employment.
