About the Workplace
The Department of Law currently has over 65 employees. The department is responsible for education within the law program and a large number of independent courses, and participates in several other educational programs at the university. The department provides education at all levels with a strong focus on problem-based learning. The department has three master's programs and offers education at the doctoral level. Research at the department covers many different legal areas. Main Duties
The main duties include teaching in Swedish and English at undergraduate and advanced levels with associated administration. Depending on your competence and current needs, teaching may involve courses in various programs such as the law program and independent courses that the department offers or participates in. Teaching includes supervision and examination of theses and degree projects, course responsibility and course administration. The duties also include participating in development work and joint activities at the Department of Law. Teaching is often conducted in teaching teams where you work together with colleagues to plan and deliver instruction.
An important aspect of all teaching at the Department of Law is its scientific foundation. The basis of the position is therefore both an independent research career and a willingness and ability to support and contribute to the entire operation by supporting and developing research at the department. The duties therefore include successfully conducting independent research and developing your own research profile, collaborating with the department's researchers and doctoral students, participating in developing the department's research and research environments, seeking external research funding, following developments in your own subject area, and actively participating in joint research activities.
The position includes 20% competence development time. This time is typically used for research. In addition to teaching and research, the position includes teaching-related administration, personnel and planning meetings, and meetings related to both research and teaching.
The work location is Umeå and we expect university lecturers to be present at the workplace and actively participate in the department's activities.
Qualifications
According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the Employment Regulations for Teachers at Umeå University, eligibility for appointment as university lecturer requires having demonstrated pedagogical competence and holding a doctoral degree or equivalent scientific competence, or other professional competence of relevance to the subject matter and duties of the position.
For this position, a Doctor of Laws (Juris Doctor) degree or a foreign degree assessed as equivalent to a doctoral degree is required.
Evaluation Criteria and Weighting
The evaluation criteria for the position are scientific, pedagogical, and administrative competence.
In weighing these criteria, particular weight shall be placed on scientific competence. Great weight shall be placed on pedagogical competence. Weight shall be placed on administrative competence.
In assessing scientific competence, particular weight shall be placed on the ability to independently conduct and publish original, high-quality research. Particular weight shall also be placed on experience developing a successful independent research line, scientific output, and the ability to seek and competitively obtain external research funding. Great weight shall be placed on experience presenting at conferences and the ability to communicate research to society. In assessing scientific competence, all these factors shall be evaluated based on the productivity that can be expected in relation to the time since obtaining the doctorate.
In assessing pedagogical competence, particular weight shall be placed on documented experience teaching and supervising at undergraduate and advanced levels. Great weight shall be given to experience teaching within one or more legal areas in the mandatory part of the law program, or having subject competence that corresponds to the content of the mandatory part of the law program.
In assessing administrative competence, great weight shall be placed on experience with program and course responsibility and course planning and administration.
Particular weight shall be placed on the ability to teach in both Swedish and English.
A general prerequisite for teachers at Umeå University is both good collaboration skills and the competence and suitability otherwise needed to perform the duties well.
