The museum consists of three parts: the city quarters, the rural Valla gård, and the nature reserve Vallaskogen, with peasant forest that is managed as it was in earlier times. Here city and countryside meet within walking distance of Linköping city center. In the open-air museum there are some 50 cultural-historical gardens. Responsibility for gardens is included in the operational area of Operations and Living Collections, which is led by an operations manager. Some weekend work occurs in connection with events and during the summer, as well as 2-3 regular weekend shifts/year.
