Stockholm University's marine field station Askö Laboratory is located on the island of Askö in the Trosa archipelago. Much of what we know today about the Baltic Sea comes from here. Since 1961, researchers from Sweden and around the world have conducted scientific studies here in various collaborations. Askö Laboratory has also been an important location for the development of Swedish marine environmental monitoring. About the Position As captain and engineer at Askö Laboratory, you will have a central and varied role in the daily operations of our marine field station. The position combines technical work and maintenance with boat operation, deck work, and practical support to researchers and students. You will be an important part of the team that ensures Askö Laboratory functions – from technical installations and vessels to equipment and practical support for the researchers and students working at the station. The work is diverse and may involve troubleshooting and maintaining a technical facility one day, operating a boat or working on deck the next day, and then assisting a research group with setting up an experimental installation. Work Tasks Boats and Engines – Technical Operations and Maintenance A central part of the position is ensuring safe operation, maintenance, and functionality of our boats and vessels. As part of the team, you will, among other things: operate our smaller boats and work on deck, including duties as a deckhand and crane operator in connection with sampling and field work participate in shorter and longer research expeditions with our larger research vessel R/V Electra af Askö, including voyages with overnight stays perform inspections, service, troubleshooting, and maintenance of boat engines and associated technical systems work hands-on with engines, machinery, and other technical equipment identify and address minor technical problems and assess when external service or repair is needed contribute to preventive maintenance and planning of service operations. You will also provide practical support to the research and education conducted at the station. This may involve: preparing, handling, and maintaining equipment for research and education assisting researchers and students in setting up experimental and sampling equipment solving practical problems that arise in connection with field work receiving and directing visitors and contributing to a high level of service at the field station. Qualifications We are looking for someone with extensive experience working at sea, solid experience operating boats, and broad technical knowledge and interest. You have practical skills, are solution-oriented, and enjoy working with technology, people, and marine operations. For this position, Deck Officer Class VIII and Engineer Officer Class VIII are key competencies. We ideally would like you to already hold both qualifications, but we also welcome applicants who are currently studying or otherwise working toward meeting the requirements and can obtain the qualifications by the start date. We are looking for someone who has: experience in similar work Deck Officer Class VIII Engineer Officer Class VIII and experience with practical maintenance of boats and machinery documented technical training or equivalent documented work experience in technology, operations, and maintenance Category B driver's license medical certificate for seafarers, or meets the requirements for obtaining a medical certificate for seafarers for the relevant type of service.
