The Center for Multilingualism works to ensure students have the opportunity to receive instruction in their native language and academic support in the language they master best. Currently, 38 different languages are represented within the program. We collaborate with both municipal and independent school authorities, from preschool through upper secondary school. Students who have at least one guardian with a native language other than Swedish have the opportunity to study their language as a school subject. Through native language instruction, students strengthen their multilingualism, develop their identity, and build pride in their language and background. We are now seeking a native language teacher in Sinhala! Employment Information This position is a fixed-term part-time appointment at 55%, with the possibility of adjustment. Start date by agreement, through December 31, 2026. Your Responsibilities Working as a native language teacher is a dynamic and varied position where student enrollment guides the planning. You will visit different schools throughout the municipality—both centrally located and in outlying areas—to meet students in their school environments. Your role may include the following tasks: - Native language instruction - Academic support in the native language - Distance instruction and distance support - Language support initiatives in collaboration with the Welcome Unit Hej Umeå Native language instruction takes place in groups or individually within municipal schools, from preschool through grade 9, primarily in afternoons outside regular class hours. Students in grades F–3 receive in-person instruction at their home school, while students from grade 4 onward may receive instruction at another school location. Bus passes are provided when needed for travel between schools. Distance instruction may be offered for students in outlying areas from grade 2 onward. The work is independent and includes planning, instruction, grading, and evaluation according to Swedish curriculum. Academic support means you assist students in grades 1–9 and in Language Introduction in upper secondary school. Support can be provided before, during, or after regular class time. You work closely with mentors and subject teachers, who are responsible for planning, while you provide support in the native language to strengthen students' learning development. Support may also be provided to the Hej Umeå Welcome Unit when receiving newly arrived students, for example through information conversations and language assessments. Requirements - Sinhala as your native language with documented knowledge of the language - Approved Swedish B/Swedish 2 - Good digital skills - Teacher training, Swedish or foreign—alternatively other pedagogical experience - Valid certificate from the disclosure of offences register, as required by the suitability screening law Meritorious - Knowledge of additional languages Please attach a CV and any personal letter written in Swedish, as well as any teaching license if applicable.
