At the Department of Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition, research is conducted in several areas, such as endocrinology, hematology, gastroenterology, hypertension, pulmonary medicine and allergology, as well as clinical nutrition with a research focus on body composition and energy metabolism. The research is conducted in close collaboration with healthcare at both Sahlgrenska University Hospital and Mölndal Hospital. At Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre (Center for Bone and Arthritis Research, CBAR), interdisciplinary and translational research is conducted on skeletal diseases, including osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Physicians, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students and biomedical analysts work together to improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases affecting bone structure and function. The advertised researcher position will be placed within Sahlgrenska Osteoporosis Centre (SOC). Researchers at SOC were the first to demonstrate that the gut microbiota affects bone mass. The candidate will participate in a project funded through an ERC Advanced Grant to Professor Claes Ohlsson. Within the project, researchers will study the importance of bacteria, viruses and fungi for various clinical phenotypes. The project has access to over 34,000 study participants with metagenomic sequence data and abundant clinical phenotypes, and is thus tailored to establish the possible causality of human gut microbiota for diseases. Duties You will work on developing formulations based on short-chain fatty acids in various matrices and/or nanoparticles for optimal release and delivery in the gastrointestinal tract. The duties include responsibility for analyses with GC-MS, NMR and other chromatographic methods. You are expected to contribute to the research group's methodological development within material characterization. The project also encompasses synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles as well as chemical modification of polysaccharides to achieve optimal material properties. The work is conducted in close collaboration with medical researchers who evaluate the developed products in vivo. Qualifications For the position, a doctoral degree in materials science, materials chemistry, chemical engineering or another related field is required. Furthermore, documented experience of research on how various materials affect health and function in the gastrointestinal tract is required. The applicant must have documented experience with GC-MS and NMR analyses as well as chemical synthesis. Experience in development and characterization of nanoparticles for medical or pharmaceutical applications is highly meriting. Experience with in vitro systems that mimic conditions in the gastrointestinal tract is also meriting. Very good ability to express yourself in English orally and in writing is required. Scientific publications in relevant research areas are meriting. Great weight will be placed on personal suitability. We seek a person who can work independently, has good collaboration skills as well as good ability to plan, organize and drive the work forward.
