The Swedish Migration Agency is now seeking a unit manager for the overseas control unit. The Overseas Control Unit is part of the Overseas Section within the National Operations Division. The Overseas Section coordinates and conducts migration activities at Sweden's overseas missions, manages the resettlement process, and coordinates return procedures for those leaving Sweden. The operations are divided into eight units, of which the Overseas Control Unit is one. Your Workplace The unit is under development and is scheduled to start on November 1, 2026. It is part of the Swedish Migration Agency's control organization and is responsible for control activities related to overseas missions. The unit's mandate includes identifying risks and vulnerabilities regarding abuse, crime, and threats to society in the agency's case management processes. Work is conducted in close cooperation with the National Control Unit and includes mapping country-based phenomena, methods, and actors. Additionally, it involves following up on tips and indicators, developing new working methods, and providing support in investigations for staff at the Swedish Migration Agency and overseas missions. The unit collaborates with other parts of the agency and migration activities at overseas missions. Collaboration also takes place with, among others, police and ID liaison officers, foreign authorities and organizations, forums for local Schengen cooperation, and other networks within the control area. As head of the unit, you will receive a meaningful assignment and employees with genuine commitment to our mission. You will be responsible for intensive development work to advance the Swedish Migration Agency's operations within the unit's area of focus. About Your Assignment As unit manager, you have personnel, budget, and workplace environment responsibility for the unit and its employees. Your role is part of the section's management and you report to the section manager. A central part of the assignment is initially leading the establishment of the new unit. You translate the assignment into clear goals, shared priorities, functioning structures, working methods, and forms of cooperation. You ensure that the unit's knowledge, mappings, and analyses are translated into relevant risk assessments, priorities, decisions, measures, and support to relevant parts of the organization. You lead employees with specialist expertise and create conditions for them to develop in their roles and carry out their assignments with high quality. You utilize and strengthen employees' competence, engagement, and drive and work toward a work environment characterized by participation, accountability, and development. Since the role is highly characterized by collaboration with various actors internally and externally, it is important that you are communicative and clear—and at the same time receptive, unpretentious, and able to build good relationships with those around you. Your Competencies We place great emphasis on the personal qualities required to successfully lead the unit. The assignment is multifaceted and requires you to be strategic, analytical, and structured. You have a talent for analyzing complex information, can identify patterns, evaluate information from various sources, and translate your analyses into well-founded assessments and decisions. You have the ability to see the bigger picture and consider the broader perspective. Employees in the unit are located in different places and are expected to travel on shorter and longer assignments, so you need experience leading remotely. As unit manager, you are also expected to have the ability to travel both within Sweden and abroad. In our work as civil servants, high demands are also placed on judgment and strong security and confidentiality awareness. Great weight will be placed on personal suitability. We are looking for someone who has: Academic education (minimum 120 credits) in a relevant field Managerial experience with responsibility for personnel, workplace environment, and budget Experience leading complex change and development work with good results Knowledge of the Swedish Migration Agency's core processes Very strong ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish and English. The role requires very strong presentation and negotiation skills in both languages Swedish citizenship It is meritorious if you have: Experience working with control and abuse issues Experience leading experts Experience working in a security-sensitive environment Experience working at an overseas mission and cooperation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Security vetting with record check according to the Security Protection Act (2018:585) will be conducted. Based on this, Swedish citizenship is required. Employment is conditional on a approved security vetting.
