The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases, among others. One of the core principles of the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer collaboration between medical research and healthcare. Research is conducted within cancer precision medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genomics and neurobiology, molecular tools and functional genomics, neuro-oncology and neurodegeneration, and vascular biology. Duties The advertised doctoral project will investigate the significance of the complement system, a part of the innate immune defense, for endothelial cell and blood vessel development and function. The project will examine endothelial cell-specific expression of complement factors and its importance for endothelial cell activation and thrombosis formation. The project involves work with advanced cell models and vascular organoids, as well as analysis methods such as flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. The group's work is translational, and there is an opportunity to verify experimental findings in clinical material. The candidate is expected to independently drive the project together with other members of the research group as well as with national and international colleagues and collaborators. The duties may also include teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time. Qualifications Eligible for education at research level is someone who has - completed a degree at advanced level in immunology or another relevant subject area, or - completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level including an independent work of at least 15 higher education credits, or - acquired in other ways substantially equivalent knowledge. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with documented practical and theoretical experience in molecular biological research on the complement system and innate immune defense. Excellent knowledge of English in speech and writing is a requirement for the position as the research is conducted in an international environment. The ability to work both independently and in a group is a requirement, and great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
