Project Description
At Ångström Advanced Battery Centre, we develop next-generation batteries with the goal of making them more energy-dense and more resource-efficient. Some strategies to achieve this include moving towards sodium batteries, batteries with solid materials as electrolytes, and batteries built without bulky anode materials – a so-called "anode-free" design. In a larger research project with National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, we will develop and study anode-free sodium batteries based on polymer electrolytes. We are therefore seeking a PhD student to participate in Uppsala University's part of the project.
Duties
The work includes experimental activities within polymer science, materials chemistry, electrochemistry, and spectroscopy. Both material development and construction of battery cells, electrochemical testing, and spectroscopic material analysis (primarily XPS) will be relevant. The work takes place in close international collaboration, so both shorter and longer research visits to the Taiwanese project partner may be appropriate. The duties may also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, but no more than 20% of working time.
Qualification Requirements
Eligibility for doctoral education requires:
an advanced degree in chemistry, physics, or materials science, or
completion of course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level (of which 15 credits constitute independent work), with content relevant to doctoral education, or
other equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside the country
The applicant must also have:
excellent English proficiency, both spoken and written.
Great importance will also be placed on personal qualities such as good collaboration skills, drive and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to have the ability needed to complete doctoral studies.
Desirable/Meriting Experience
Experience with battery manufacturing and electrochemical characterization, advanced material analysis (particularly electron spectroscopy), polymeric materials and polymer electrolytes.

The employment is fixed-term, according to the Higher Education Ordinance Ch. 5 Sec. 7. Full-time position. Start date: 2027-01-11 or by agreement. Location: Uppsala
