Description of the Workplace This position is affiliated with the Division of Solid State Physics at the Department of Physics, a division with approximately 100 employees conducting extensive research centered on various aspects of nano- and semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science to bio- and quantum physics with various applications. The division is a central part of NanoLund, Lund University's major interdisciplinary research center for nanoscience and nanotechnology. The division also operates Lund Nano Lab, a central and shared facility for fabrication of materials and components at the nanoscale. The division is also strongly committed to undergraduate education, particularly within the civil engineering program "Technical Nanoscience" at LTH. You will join a research group conducting experimental research in topological quantum electronics. Our goal is to develop new quantum components, including quantum bits (qubits), by exploiting electron correlations and topology in two-dimensional materials. Being a PhD Student As a PhD student, you are both enrolled as a student and employed at Lund University. As a research student, you will be trained in a scientific approach. This can briefly be described as gaining practice in critical and analytical thinking, solving problems independently using appropriate methodological choices, and developing research ethics awareness. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to work on projects, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your teaching abilities. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by an advisor. Project Description This PhD project focuses on DC characterization and investigation at microwave frequencies of anyonic excitations in graphene-based quantum components. The PhD student will fabricate ultra-high-quality van der Waals heterostructures at Lund Nano Lab and study them using electronic measurements and microwave measurements at low temperatures. The PhD student will also contribute to establishing a new experimental laboratory, including infrastructure for van der Waals component fabrication and installation of a dilution refrigerator reaching temperatures below 10 mK, equipped with a 14 T magnet and connections for both DC and radiofrequency measurements. The position provides extensive practical experience in nanofabrication, cryogenic measurement techniques, microwave electronics, data analysis, and quantum component physics. The PhD student will be an important part of a collaborative research team and will collaborate with research groups at Lund University and leading international institutions. The project combines fundamental quantum physics with a technology-oriented approach to develop new types of nanoelectronic and quantum components. Responsibilities You will primarily dedicate yourself to your doctoral research, which includes participation in research projects, doctoral courses, seminars, and conferences. The goal of the doctoral project is to build anyon arrays and use them as qubits. You will work both independently and in close collaboration with other partners in the project. Responsibilities include: Fabrication of components in a clean room environment at Lund Nano Lab. Transport and high-frequency microwave measurements, including programming of measurement scripts. Analysis of measurement results to understand how components function and to design new components. Writing and publishing scientific papers on the results and presenting them at conferences. Use, maintenance, and development of equipment in the measurement laboratories, including installation of a dilution refrigerator. Responsibilities also include participation in teaching and other departmental work (however, maximum 20% of working time).
