Electrification and digitalization are among the most important areas for transitioning to sustainable societies. The Department of Electrical Engineering conducts successful research and education in these areas – including renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, industrial IoT, 6G communication and wireless sensor networks, as well as research and education in Life Science, health technology, smart electronic sensors and medical systems. The Department of Electrical Engineering is an international environment with approximately 160 employees contributing to important technical energy and health solutions at Ångströmlaboratoriet. We are now seeking a PhD student in electrical engineering with focus on power system reliability. Come work with us! The position is located at the Division of Electric Power Engineering, within the Department of Electrical Engineering. Here you will find a pleasant work environment with an active PhD student network and a variety of experimental projects. The division collaborates with Swedish companies – both public and private – as well as other stakeholders in various research areas. We look forward to your application. Help us build the future! Project Description Over the coming decades, the power system is expected to become strongly dependent on reliable electricity production from renewable energy sources, particularly land-based and offshore wind power as well as solar cells (PV). At the same time, major changes are occurring in energy and electricity supply from non-renewable sources, largely due to national policy decisions regarding nuclear power and imports of gas and oil. The demand side is also undergoing transformation, driven by changes such as electrification of the transport sector and other parts of society, as well as increased use of heat pumps and air conditioning. Finally, climate change is leading to altered weather patterns, with heat waves and other extreme weather events affecting both society and the energy system. There are significant knowledge gaps regarding electricity production reliability under extreme weather conditions and in energy systems undergoing major transformations. In this project, the PhD student will investigate supply security in the European power system in both current and future scenarios, taking into account changes in energy production, energy consumption, and climate. The project is part of the Centre for Natural Disaster Science (CNDS), a national research center aimed at preventing and improving society's preparedness for risks by increasing knowledge about the dynamics and consequences of natural disasters. Collaboration and communication within the CNDS network provides an interdisciplinary platform for exchanging expertise in natural disasters and risk reduction. The research group at Uppsala University has extensive experience in electrical engineering research and maintains a substantial laboratory operation. We offer varied and exciting work that is shaped by the PhD student and the research group together. Duties The primary responsibility of a PhD student is to pursue doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects as well as doctoral education courses. Teaching and other departmental service may be included in the duties, but no more than 20% of working time. Qualification Requirements Eligible for doctoral education is someone who has completed an advanced degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, engineering physics, or equivalent, or completed at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at the advanced level including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. We place great emphasis on personal qualities such as good collaboration and communication skills with other researchers. You should be goal-oriented, organized, and able to work effectively both individually and in groups. The candidate must have excellent ability to express themselves in English both orally and in writing. Meritorious Qualifications Experience and interest in numerical modeling and programming as well as experimental work are meritorious. Industrial experience is meritorious. Good oral and written skills in Swedish are meritorious. A degree in civil engineering is meritorious.
