The positions will be filled based on the applicant who, in competition, is assessed to have the best qualifications in science and pedagogy as well as the potential to develop successful research regardless of subject area. The position includes a start-up package with funding equivalent to a doctoral position as well as operating funds for your research. Applications are welcome until October 1! Job Responsibilities The position is aimed at early-career researchers, and the purpose of the appointment is to give an Assistant Professor the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and qualify both scientifically and pedagogically within their subject area in order to meet the requirements for a professor position. The position as Assistant Professor is primarily, at least 80 percent, focused on scientific qualifications. The remaining time should be primarily focused on pedagogical qualifications. Teaching may partially be conducted using internet-based methods at a distance. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English. Administrative tasks may be included. The duty station is Umeå, but work at other locations may occur. Eligibility Requirements To be eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor, you must have completed a doctoral degree or have equivalent scientific competence. To be eligible for employment, the applicant must have documented ability to teach/instruct in English. Those who do not have the ability to teach in Swedish are expected to acquire this ability during the employment period. Evaluation Criteria Since the position is aimed at early-career researchers, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Section 4 Chapter 4a, preference should be given to those who have completed a doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence no more than seven years before the time of application for the Assistant Professor position, according to the Higher Education Ordinance Section 4 Chapter 4a and decisions made at Umeå University. However, those who completed their doctoral degree or reached equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special circumstances. Special circumstances refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar situations, Higher Education Ordinance Section 4 Chapter 4a. Further evaluation criteria for appointment as Assistant Professor are: Scientific competence, pedagogical competence, and administrative competence. A general evaluation criterion for teachers at Umeå University is good collaboration skills, as well as the competence and suitability otherwise needed to perform the work tasks well. Weighting of Evaluation Criteria When filling the position, the weighting of qualifications will be as follows: Scientific competence (3), pedagogical competence (2), administrative competence (1). Description of Evaluation Criteria When assessing scientific competence, particular weight will be given to originality, independence, and potential to develop an independent successful research line within your subject area. Postdoctoral research conducted outside the university where you completed your doctorate is highly meriting. When assessing pedagogical competence, consideration will be given to planning, implementation, and evaluation of teaching, as well as supervision and examination. Administrative competence can be demonstrated through experience in undergraduate education planning, skill in developing and leading others, and administrative skills, etc. For this position, it is particularly meriting if the applicant has had their main employment outside Sweden during the three years prior to application. More About the Position The position as Assistant Professor is a fixed-term appointment in accordance with Section 4 Chapter 12a of the Higher Education Ordinance for six years on a full-time basis with the right to be considered for promotion to professor. An application for promotion consideration must be submitted six months before the fixed-term appointment ends. If an Assistant Professor is not promoted after consideration, the fixed-term appointment will end. A plan for pedagogical and scientific development will be established in connection with the appointment. One pedagogical and two scientific mentors will be appointed to support the implementation of the plans. Promotion criteria for the position will be established upon appointment. The position will organizationally belong to a department within the Faculty of Medicine. Department placement will be made in consultation with you based on where your research fits best; please indicate your preference for department placement in your application. The position includes a start-up package with funding equivalent to a doctoral position as well as operating funds of 100,000 kr per year for six years.
