The Department of Language Studies at Umeå University's Faculty of Humanities conducts education and research in language, literature, and language pedagogy in Swedish, English, Finnish, French, Italian, linguistics, Meänkieli, Russian, Sami, Spanish, and German. We are now seeking a university lecturer in English with a focus on linguistics. The position is a substitute appointment for the period 2027-01-15 through 2028-01-14. Description and Responsibilities The position comprises 80% teaching/administration and 20% professional development. The position includes teaching in courses on English linguistics at the undergraduate and advanced levels, particularly in the subject teacher education program in English and in courses on cognitive linguistics and language and cognition. Development work related to teaching is included, as is supervision and examination of theses as well as conducting practicum visits. Teaching takes place both on campus and in online courses. In addition to teaching and research, the position includes teaching-related administration as well as personnel, subject-matter, and planning meetings. Qualifications To be eligible for appointment as a university lecturer, an applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical skill and hold a doctorate in English with a focus on linguistics or have equivalent scientific competence, or possess other professional expertise relevant to the position's subject matter and work tasks. A Swedish subject teacher degree in English and very strong language skills in English and Swedish, as well as the ability to teach in these languages, are required for the position. Selection Criteria The selection criteria are: scientific and pedagogical skill in English with a focus on linguistics, particularly cognitive linguistics; language teaching pedagogy skill; experience with online teaching and development work; and administrative skill. Other selection criteria include strong collaboration skills and the competence and suitability otherwise needed to perform the work tasks well. Scientific skill must be demonstrated through independent scientific production. Evaluation criteria include: breadth and depth of research – quality and scope; originality in research; productivity; contribution to the international scientific community; roles within the scientific community; ability to competitively obtain external research funding; engagement with surrounding society. Pedagogical skill for appointment as a university lecturer must be demonstrated through documented experience in teaching on a scientific basis at the university. Evaluation criteria for pedagogical skill in appointments on a scientific basis include: ability to plan, implement, and evaluate teaching and ability to supervise and examine students at all educational levels; ability to vary teaching methods and examination forms in relation to expected learning outcomes and the nature of the subject; experience with engagement with surrounding society in planning and implementation of education; participation in developing learning environments, teaching materials, and educational resources; a reflective approach to student learning and one's own teaching role. Competence can be obtained through university pedagogical education, other education relevant to teaching at the university, or documented, proven experience in teaching at the university. Balancing Selection Criteria Equal care shall be taken in assessing pedagogical and scientific skill. Particular weight shall be given to scientific and pedagogical skill. In balancing these two criteria, pedagogical skill shall be given the greatest weight. When assessing scientific skill, particular weight shall be given to skill in English with a focus on linguistics, particularly cognitive linguistics. Great weight shall be given to the applicant's language teaching pedagogy skill. Great weight shall also be given to experience with and competence in teaching online courses and experience in development work, particularly course development. Planning and implementation of teaching and examination largely occurs in teaching teams. Weight shall therefore be given to strong collaboration skills and the competence and suitability otherwise needed to perform the work tasks well.
