Fysikum is one of the largest departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University, featuring a dynamic and international research environment. This position is located at the Division of Medical Radiation Physics, where we conduct leading research in medical image processing, radiation physics, and artificial intelligence for oncological applications. More information about us can be found at: Fysikum - Stockholm University. Job Responsibilities The Research Engineer will architect, further develop, and maintain a high-performance, container-based computing platform dedicated to medical data analysis and artificial intelligence workflows. In this role, you will design and deploy scalable MLOps pipelines for automated model training, experiment tracking, and clinical inference, as well as manage Kubernetes cluster orchestration, distributed storage systems, and GPU resource allocation in multi-tenant environments. Key technical responsibilities include integrating healthcare data infrastructure such as DICOM servers, PACS interfaces, and web-based visualization tools, as well as developing active learning pipelines and interactive annotation interfaces for human-in-the-loop validation. The engineer will also build secure RESTful APIs and microservices in the backend, implement identity and access management (IAM) protocols in accordance with healthcare data protection standards, and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines for testing and deployment to ensure platform reliability and robustness. At the intersection of computational technology and healthcare, the engineer will work in close collaboration with data scientists, biomedical engineers, and clinicians. The role involves translating complex clinical needs and research requirements into robust software specifications, which directly enables deployment and prospective evaluation of cutting-edge AI models in clinical workflows. Additionally, the engineer will monitor cluster performance, optimize computational loads, and provide practical technical support and training for researchers and clinical users. Qualifications Candidates must have an advanced degree (Master's or equivalent engineering degree) in computer science, software engineering, or a related quantitative field. Essential qualifications include very strong knowledge of Linux environments and Python programming, documented practical experience with container management and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes, backend and API development (RESTful services and database integration), and established software development workflows with Git. Excellent communication skills in English, both spoken and written, as well as a strong ability to collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary environment with engineers and clinicians, are required. Desirable qualifications include practical experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, medical imaging standards (DICOM, NIfTI), and image servers and visualization tools (Orthanc, PACS, 3D Slicer). It is also advantageous to have familiarity with medical AI and MLOps frameworks (PyTorch, MONAI, MLflow, Kubeflow), experience with CI/CD and GitOps tools (ArgoCD, Ansible), and knowledge of security and authentication protocols (Keycloak, OIDC) for handling sensitive health data. About the Position This is a full-time position of fixed duration for 5 months, with the possibility of extension (up to a total of 7–8 months depending on project funding). Stockholm University applies individual salary determination. Start date as soon as agreed upon.
