The Department of Global Studies is seeking a full-time researcher for 12 months for the research program CLIMIG – A New Interdisciplinary Framework for Studying the Relationship Between Climate Change and Migration. About the Project CLIMIG is an interdisciplinary research program that investigates how climate change interacts with social, cultural, economic, political, and ecological factors that affect migration. The program focuses on three mountain regions that are particularly vulnerable to climate change: the Ethiopian Highlands, the Andes in Peru, and the Himalayas in Nepal. By combining qualitative and quantitative methods and integrating climate, migration, and socioeconomic data, the project aims to develop a new analytical framework for studying climate-related migration. More information about the project can be found on the CLIMIG website: https://www.gu.se/forskning/climig-ett-nytt-tvarvetenskapligt-ramverk-for-att-studera-relationen-mellan-klimatforandringar-och-migration Duties As a researcher within CLIMIG, you will primarily work with analysis of quantitative data on migration, climate change, and related socioeconomic conditions, as well as qualitative data, from the project's research areas in Peru, Ethiopia, and Nepal. The work includes analysis and integration of survey data and spatial data, including remote sensing data, and interview data, as well as scientific publication of the project's results. The duties may also include combining quantitative and qualitative research results, organizing and participating in workshops where research results are fed back to relevant stakeholders. The work is carried out in close collaboration with other researchers and international partners within CLIMIG. Qualifications The position requires a doctoral degree in cultural geography, development studies, migration studies, social anthropology, or another subject that the employer considers relevant to the project. You must have documented experience in research on climate-related migration or related issues, as well as very strong competence in quantitative social science methods and statistical analysis, and also qualitative data collection and analysis. Experience with research in the Andes, Ethiopia, and/or Nepal is advantageous. Particularly advantageous are: experience leading research and fieldwork teams, particularly in the Global South experience with geographic information systems (GIS), for example QGIS or ArcGIS, for analysis and presentation of spatial data experience combining survey data with remote sensing data or other types of spatial data competence and experience combining quantitative and qualitative methods in data collection and analysis, particularly in the Global South experience organizing or facilitating workshops for feeding back research results to relevant stakeholders experience leading and administering international research networks Great emphasis will be placed on the ability to work independently and simultaneously collaborate well in an interdisciplinary and international research team. You need good organizational skills and very strong ability to communicate and write scientifically in English. Employment The position is a fixed-term employment for 12 months at 100 percent with placement at the Department of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg. Start date January 1, 2027.
