The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology (IMBIM) at Uppsala University is a broad international environment for research and teaching. At IMBIM, basic research is conducted in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, tumor biology, comparative genetics, functional genomics, immunology, bacteriology, and virology. The department's research is primarily fundamental, but has clear connections and relevance to health and disease in both animals and humans. A more detailed description can be found at Research – Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology – Uppsala University Project Background Infections transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks are becoming increasingly common globally. The factors that enable the introduction, adaptation, establishment, and spread of vector-borne viruses and bacteria in new regions are largely unknown. Furthermore, research on vector-borne infections in temperate regions is underrepresented. Our research group, Lundkvist, Åke – Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology – Uppsala University, is interested in understanding how disease transmission via ticks and mosquitoes in northern countries is affected by climate change. We use molecular, virological, and bacterial techniques and models (e.g., PCR, sequencing, cell culture, various immunological methods, and live mosquitoes) to investigate which abiotic and biotic factors govern the spread and establishment of mosquitoes and ticks and the viruses and bacteria they transmit. Project Description and Responsibilities The researcher will work on biological and ecological questions regarding vector-borne infections together with others in the research group. The work also involves regularly presenting the work in group meetings, seminars, and international conferences. Our research group focuses on understanding how disease transmission via ticks and mosquitoes in northern countries is affected by climate change. The group has developed several methods to study these mechanisms and has access to its own biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory and a unique vector laboratory. Qualification Requirements A PhD with a background in infectious and vector biology with an interest in multidisciplinary research. Documented experience in infectious biology, particularly work with tick-borne pathogens, and extensive experience working in a biosafety level 3 laboratory is required. We are looking for a highly motivated, well-organized, driven, and enthusiastic person who is interested in our research area and ready to explore new directions in science. The candidate should have a high degree of independence but also needs to be able to collaborate smoothly and function productively in a team. Excellent English language skills are required (written and oral). We place great importance on personal suitability and are looking for a highly creative and motivated colleague who appreciates working in a team. Selection Criteria When selecting among qualified applicants, particular weight will be given to scientific proficiency. The University will primarily consider in this recruitment the person who, after a comprehensive assessment of documented qualifications, competence, and proficiency, is deemed to have the best prerequisites to carry out and develop the current work tasks and contribute to positive development of the activities.
