Svea is a state-owned vessel used primarily for environmental monitoring and research. SLU is now seeking a Ship Inspector and Deputy Head of SLU's Ship Department with a talent for problem-solving. About the role You will work together with other colleagues in the Ship Department on the management of the vessel in consultation with the Swedish Maritime Administration's crew and shipping company. You will be part of a small team in the Ship Department working closely with the captain, technical managers, and the Swedish Maritime Administration's shipping organization. You will also collaborate with other authorities and industry organizations. The position includes working as owner's representative to the Swedish Maritime Administration, which is responsible for the vessel's management. Your main responsibilities will include maritime regulations, vessel maintenance and technical development, and oversight of the vessel's operations. Work will largely take place in the office at SLU's facilities in Uppsala but also aboard the vessel Svea. The home port is Lysekil, but the vessel also regularly stays in Kalmar. The position involves travel, primarily within but also outside the country. Your background We are seeking someone with a maritime background and a merchant marine engineer's or master's license. You have several years of experience or education and experience that we consider equivalent. You are an organized person with good technical knowledge of vessels. Knowledge of survey or research vessels as well as experience working at shipping company offices is a merit. It is also an advantage if you have previous experience working with classification societies and knowledge of ISM. We place great importance on your personal qualities, and management experience is a merit. The role requires that you make independent decisions, so you must be proactive and self-directed. You are open to others and find it easy to collaborate and build professional relationships. You have good communication skills and the ability to take a holistic perspective on operations. We place high demands on our employees' security and confidentiality awareness. The position is classified as security-sensitive, and security clearance with background check and record check will be conducted before an employment decision is made. You must be a Nordic citizen and hold a category B driving license. About us The Ship Department is based in Uppsala and is responsible for representing SLU as owner of the vessel. The department consists of 10 people: a manager, vessel coordinator, five vessel technicians, and resources for finance, communication, and scientific planning. Svea is a national resource for Swedish environmental monitoring and marine research, and can also contribute to increased international research collaboration in the marine sector. Svea currently has over 230 expedition days at sea, with researchers from SLU, SMHI, SGU, and Stockholm University. We also work with hydrographic surveying with the Swedish Maritime Administration's surveyors.
