Field Hydrologist
Sveriges Meteorologiska och Hydrologiska Institu · Vollzeit
Folkborgsvägen 17, NORRKÖPING, Schweden
Do you want a position where you combine technology, measurements, data, and practical fieldwork – and where your work contributes to society's preparedness? Do you enjoy working outdoors in varying environments and weather conditions, while also appreciating problem-solving and careful work at the computer? SMHI is now seeking two Field Hydrologists for the Water Observations group. With us, you will work with observation networks and measurements that form the basis for forecasts, warnings, analyses, and decisions. About the Position As a field hydrologist, you are an important part of SMHI's work to collect and quality-assure observations of water flow and water level from our hydrological and sea level stations. The work combines office work with extensive fieldwork and suits you if you are both technically interested and enjoy practical work. An important part of the position involves travel related to hydrological field measurements. You can expect approximately 12–16 weeks of travel per year. Travel periods can be up to two weeks long. Fieldwork is conducted throughout Sweden and involves outdoor work regardless of season and weather conditions. Most of the remaining work time is based in the office and includes, among other things, preparation and follow-up work for field trips, processing and quality assurance of measurement data, review of hydrological observations, maintenance and development of measurement equipment, and participation in development projects and other operational activities. In the field, we use several different types of measuring instruments and techniques. Advanced measurements of water velocity and flow are performed using acoustic instruments based on Doppler technology. We also use video filming from drones and fixed cameras to determine water flows. Fieldwork takes place in many different types of environments and includes work at small and large watercourses with varying water flows. Work can be performed both from land and from small boats. Measurement sites can be located far from the nearest road and are sometimes reached on foot or by skis. Equipment must then be transported and carried to the measurement site. The terrain can be uneven and work may also involve working in confined or difficult-to-access spaces. Good physical fitness is therefore a requirement. You also need to be able to swim and swim at least 200 meters, as work may involve time in and near watercourses. About You / Your Profile We are seeking someone with higher education in hydrology, civil engineering, natural sciences, or other education and experience that we consider equivalent. You have: very good technical understanding, practical skills and manual dexterity, good computer skills and knowledge of Windows and the Office package, very good Swedish language skills in speech and writing, good English language skills in speech and writing, B-class driver's license for manual transmission, good physical fitness, swimming ability of at least 200 meters. It is meritorious if you have: basic knowledge within hydrology, experience with technical measuring instruments, experience with hydrological field measurements using acoustic measurement systems, experience with processing and analysis of hydrological data. To thrive in the role, you need to be initiative-taking, self-directed, flexible, and well-organized. You should be prepared to exert yourself when the situation requires it, while working carefully and safely.
