Project Description Research Education Subject: Biological Physics The AICell lab (https://aicell.io) at the Department of Applied Physics at KTH and Science for Life Laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research in cell and molecular biology. The group is led by Wei Ouyang and combines wet lab work with automated experimental platforms and AI-driven analysis tools. We are opening two biology-focused doctoral positions in biological physics to study cell biology alongside colleagues working on automation, computation, and AI-driven analysis. Projects will be designed in consultation with each doctoral candidate at the start of studies based on scientific interests. As a PhD candidate you will: Design and conduct experimental cell biology work — including cell culture, perturbation studies, microscopy, and related molecular biology methods. Interpret results biologically and advance scientific questions. Collaborate with colleagues working on automation, computation, and AI-driven analysis. Contribute to publications and scientific dialogue around cell and molecular biology. Supervision: Professor Hjalmar Brismar and Assistant Professor Wei Ouyang are proposed to supervise the doctoral candidate. Final decision will be made upon admission. Eligibility for Admission To be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), applicants must meet the basic eligibility requirements: Hold an advanced degree, or Have completed at least 240 university credits, of which at least 60 are at advanced level, or Have acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country. Special eligibility: Degree (or equivalent) in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicine, biophysics, or a related life science field. In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6. Selection To succeed with your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. When selecting candidates, the following abilities are assessed: Independently advance your work, Collaborate with others, Maintain a professional approach, and Analyze and work with complex questions. Strong biological foundation and genuine curiosity about cell and molecular biology. Practical experience with experimental biological work (cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology methods, or similar). Ability and willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team that combines biology, automation, and AI-driven analysis. Good English communication skills — both for explaining biology and for collaborating across disciplinary boundaries. Basic programming or data analysis skills (Python/R) are advantageous but not required. Beyond the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities. Target Degree: PhD Information on Admission and Employment Only those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as a PhD candidate. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral level education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may in limited scope (maximum 20%) perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration. A new employment as a PhD candidate is valid for a maximum of one year; employment may thereafter be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
