The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology at Linköping University is seeking a doctoral student within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network ReDiLEEP (Using science-driven Response Diversity knowledge to Leverage Efficient Ecosystem Preservation and restoration). ReDiLEEP brings together leading universities, research institutes and non-academic partners in and outside Europe to develop research on response diversity and translate new knowledge into ecosystem management, restoration and biodiversity policy. The doctoral student will contribute to this work by investigating the relationship between the structural organization of ecological networks and response diversity. Research Project DC1: How structural patterns of species interactions affect response diversity Read more here: https://liu.se/jobba-pa-liu/lediga-jobb/29763 Your responsibilities Conduct theoretical research on response diversity, ecological networks and ecosystem stability using mathematical and computational methods. Develop and implement computational models and analysis code for simulated and empirical ecological networks. Analyze and interpret results in close collaboration with empirically-focused ecologists within the ReDiLEEP network. Conduct research in accordance with the agreed research plan. Actively contribute to scientific discussions and collaborations within the research group and the broader ReDiLEEP network. Publish scientific articles and present research at international conferences and network meetings. Actively participate in ReDiLEEP network's educational activities, secondments, research communication, reporting and joint activities for the doctoral student group. As a doctoral student, you will dedicate yourself to your research education and research project. Your work may also include teaching or participation in other department assignments, up to 20 percent of full-time. Secondments and Training within the Network The position includes a total of seven months of planned secondments: 3 months at University of Namur: integrating group structures in ecological networks with functional trait theory. 3 months at Cardiff University: linking network models with experimental studies of species interactions. 1 month at Lutra Interactive: developing interactive visualization of key research findings. Your qualifications You should have: Completed a degree at an advanced level in ecology, biology, applied mathematics, computational science or computer science, or completed courses of at least 240 higher education credits of which at least 60 higher education credits are at advanced level in ecology, biology, applied mathematics, computational science or computer science, or acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way. A strong interest in theoretical ecology, ecological networks, response diversity, ecosystem stability and mathematical and computational modeling. Experience with scientific programming, quantitative analysis or computational modeling, preferably in R, Python, C++ or comparable tools. Interest in ecological modeling, network analysis and dynamical systems and in linking theoretical approaches with empirical ecological data. Ability to work independently while contributing constructively to an international and interdisciplinary doctoral network. Very good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English and good ability to write scientific text. Experience in ecological modeling, analysis of ecological networks, dynamical systems, community ecology or work with empirical biodiversity data is advantageous. Your application should include a motivation letter that demonstrates the above experience and interests. MSCA Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks at the time of recruitment: Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree. Applicants must be a doctoral student and be admitted, or eligible to be admitted, to doctoral education at Linköping University. Applicants must work full-time and exclusively within the ReDiLEEP project during the employment, in accordance with applicable MSCA rules. Mobility Rule: applicants must not have been resident or had their principal activity, such as work or studies, in Sweden for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding the recruitment date. Exemptions from the mobility rule apply, among other things, to mandatory national service, refugee status and temporary protection.
