The Department of Subject Matter Education has approximately 280 employees. The Division of Science Education comprises 26 people, including five professors, eight senior researchers, six university lecturers, and seven PhD students. The research conducted at the division encompasses all levels of the education system, with a primary focus on contributing teaching-development research. The research addresses topics such as the nature and methods of science, sustainable development and civic education, identity formation, interest, aesthetics and aesthetic activities, sexuality, consent and relationships, multilingual classrooms, and informal learning environments such as museums. The research also includes instructional design and is often conducted in close collaboration with the preschool and teaching profession. The project may be directed toward science subjects. Applications concerning preschool, after-school programs, and informal learning environments are also welcome. Eligibility Requirements To be admitted to doctoral education, applicants must meet both general and specific eligibility requirements. Eligibility must be satisfied by the final application deadline. You have general eligibility if you have completed an advanced-level degree, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp are at an advanced level, or have acquired essentially equivalent knowledge in another way within or outside the country. The university may grant an exception from the general eligibility requirement for an individual applicant if there are special grounds (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance). The decision on an exception is made by the dean upon request from the department board. For specific eligibility for admission to doctoral education in science education with a focus on school science, applicants must have completed teacher education with authorization to teach science in the relevant school form, including a thesis of at least 15 hp in the field of science education. For specific eligibility for admission to doctoral education in science education with a focus on biology, physics, geosciences, chemistry, or equivalent, applicants must have passed courses of 180 hp at the basic level in the relevant subject area, including a thesis of 15 hp. Additionally, 30 hp at an advanced level in the field of science education is required, including a thesis of 15 hp. Eligibility requirements can also be met by those who have acquired essentially equivalent competence within or outside the country. For specific eligibility, applicants must master either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English—that is, the ability to read, speak, and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English. Any equivalence assessment of eligibility is made by the department's Research Board, and the decision is made by the department board. Selection Selection among applicants will be made based on the ability to benefit from doctoral-level education. Criteria used to assess this ability include: Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. Assessment is made considering both depth and breadth of previous education. Previous scientific production. Based on theses from basic and advanced levels, and where applicable, other written scientific work, the applicant's ability to benefit from education is assessed. The assessment also considers the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to perform scientific tasks within given timeframes. Additionally, based on a comparison of scientific works, an assessment is made of the applicant's scientific development. Scientific production is evaluated with respect to critical ability, analytical ability, independence, and creativity. Research plan. As part of the application, applicants must describe their intended research area. The description must include problem formulation(s) and an outline of how the research will be conducted. The plan is assessed with respect to relevance, scientific quality, and feasibility. Collaboration ability. The applicant's ability to collaborate is assessed based on, for example, references, certificates, or interviews. Ability to express oneself orally and in writing in English. It is meritorious to also be able to express oneself orally and in writing in Swedish. Assessment will also be made considering available supervisor expertise. About the Employment We offer a fixed-term position as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for four years. As a PhD student, you will primarily focus on your own doctoral education, but the position may include work with education, research, and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20%). A new position as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year, and the employment is thereafter renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
