The Department of Subject Matter Education has approximately 280 employees. We conduct research on learning and teaching in relation to various subjects at all levels of the education system. In the Mathematics Education division, we have three professors, 12 doctors, and 16 PhD students. Our research in mathematics education consists of a broad spectrum of studies connected to many different theoretical perspectives and using various qualitative and quantitative methods. More information about us can be found at: Department of Subject Matter Education Project Description The PhD student's dissertation work will be conducted within the framework of doctoral education in mathematics education. The dissertation project is directed toward mathematics in primary and/or secondary school and how students have the opportunity to develop statistical literacy, that is, the ability to read, interpret, and draw conclusions from statistical information in various contexts. This focus can be illuminated from different perspectives, for example, students' own learning and reasoning or teachers' perceptions of statistics and statistics teaching. Which perspective is in the foreground can be adapted based on the PhD project's focus and design. The PhD project includes both deepening theoretical knowledge within the research field and, in close collaboration with the teaching profession, contributing teaching models for statistics instruction. Eligibility Requirements To be admitted to doctoral education, applicants must meet both general and specific eligibility requirements. Eligibility must be fulfilled by the final application deadline. General eligibility for doctoral-level education is held by those who have completed a degree at advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits (hp), of which at least 60 hp at advanced level, or otherwise acquired knowledge within or outside the country that is essentially equivalent. For specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in mathematics education with focus on school mathematics (preschool, primary school, and secondary school), applicants must have completed teacher education where mathematics is included, or have completed courses within a subject area of direct relevance to the program's focus. Completed courses must correspond to at least 90 hp, and at least 30 hp at advanced level in mathematics education, mathematics, or a similar relevant main subject area, of which at least 15 hp is a degree project. Eligibility requirements can also be met by those who have acquired essentially equivalent competence within or outside the country. For specific eligibility, applicants must be proficient in either Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English, that is, the ability to read, speak, and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English. Selection Selection among applicants is made with regard to the ability to benefit from doctoral-level education. Criteria used to assess this ability are: Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. Assessment is made with regard to both depth and breadth of previous education. Previous scientific production. Based on degree projects from basic and advanced levels and, where applicable, other written scientific production, the applicant's ability to benefit from education is assessed. The assessment also takes into account the time aspect, that is, the extent to which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to complete previous scientific tasks within given timeframes. Furthermore, based on a comparison of scientific works, an assessment is made of the applicant's scientific development. Scientific production is assessed with regard to critical ability, analytical ability, independence, and creativity. Research plan. In connection with the application, applicants must describe their intended research area. The description must contain a project name, problem formulation(s), and an outline of the implementation of the research work and be a maximum of 2000 words (for further instructions, see: www.su.se/enheter/institutionen-for-amnesdidaktik/forskning/borja-forska/instruktioner-for-projektbeskrivning-i-doktorandansokan). The plan is assessed with regard to scientific quality, relevance in relation to the project description, feasibility within the given timeframe (i.e., during a period corresponding to four years of full-time education). Available supervisor competence. Collaboration ability. The applicant's ability to collaborate is assessed based on, for example, references, certificates, or interviews. Ability to express yourself orally and in writing in English; it is also meritorious if you have the ability to express yourself orally and in writing in Swedish. Work samples may be performed in connection with interviews to demonstrate abilities relevant to doctoral education. Admission procedures for doctoral-level education at Stockholm University. About the Position We offer a fixed-term employment as a PhD student according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100). The period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to doctoral-level education on a full-time basis for four years. As a PhD student, you should primarily focus on your own doctoral-level education, but the position may include work with education, research, and administration to a limited extent (maximum 20%). A new employment as a PhD student is valid for a maximum of one year; the employment is then renewed with a maximum of two years at a time.
