At the Department of Subject Didactics, research is conducted on learning and teaching in relation to various subjects at all levels of the education system. Research in mathematics didactics comprises a broad spectrum of studies connected to many different theoretical perspectives and employing various qualitative and quantitative methods. More information about us can be found here: Matematikdidaktik - Stockholmsuniversitet. Project Description The doctoral candidate's thesis work will be conducted within the framework of doctoral education in mathematics didactics. The thesis project focuses on how particular mathematical giftedness in mathematics is addressed in mathematics teacher education. The project could, for example, examine teacher students' perceptions of students with particular mathematical giftedness, possibly in relation to perceptions of students experiencing difficulties. The project could also examine how future teachers are prepared to teach students with particular mathematical giftedness—for example, how higher education-based and practice-based education (VFU) collaborate regarding students with particular mathematical giftedness. The project could also address teacher students' knowledge in relation to the project's focus. Empirical studies shall be conducted in Swedish teacher education. Data may consist of, for example, observations, interviews, surveys, and documents. The goal is to contribute research-based knowledge that strengthens efforts to meet students' diverse needs in mathematics instruction. Eligibility Requirements To be admitted to doctoral education, the applicant must meet both general and specific eligibility requirements. Eligibility must be fulfilled by the final application deadline. General eligibility for education at the doctoral level is held by those who have completed a degree at the advanced level completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are at the advanced level, or acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way, within or outside the country. The university may grant an exception from the general eligibility requirement for an individual applicant if there are special grounds (7 chap., 39§ Higher Education Ordinance). The decision regarding an exception is made by the Dean following a request from the department board. For specific eligibility to be admitted to doctoral education in mathematics didactics with a focus on school mathematics (preschool, compulsory school, and upper secondary school), the applicant must have completed teacher education that includes mathematics, or have completed approved courses within a subject area of direct relevance to the education's focus. Approved courses must correspond to at least 90 credits, and at least 30 credits at the advanced level in mathematics didactics, mathematics, or a similar relevant main subject area, of which at least 15 credits are thesis work. For specific eligibility, the applicant must master Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English—that is, the ability to read, speak, and write in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English. Any equivalence assessment of eligibility is carried out by the department's Research Review Committee, and the decision is made by the department board. Selection Selection among applicants is made with regard to ability to benefit from education at the doctoral level. Criteria used to assess this ability include: Documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area. Assessment is made with regard to both depth and breadth in previous education. Previous scientific production. Based on thesis work from basic and advanced levels and, where applicable, other written scientific production, the applicant's ability to benefit from the education is assessed. Research plan. In connection with the application, the applicant must describe their intended research area. The description must contain a project title, research question(s), and an outline of the execution of the research work and must not exceed 2,000 words (for further instructions see: www.su.se/enheter/institutionen-for-amnesdidaktik/forskning/borja-forska/instruktioner-for-projektbeskrivning-i-doktorandansokan). The plan is assessed with regard to scientific quality, relevance in relation to the project description, and feasibility within the given timeframe (i.e., during a period corresponding to four years of full-time education). Available supervisor expertise. Collaboration skills. The applicant's ability to collaborate is assessed based on, for example, references, certificates, or interviews. Ability to express yourself in spoken and written English; it is also a merit if you have the ability to express yourself in spoken and written Swedish.
