Job Responsibilities: The holder of a PhD student position is expected to actively participate in the department's research and teaching environment and may need to perform departmental duties, primarily teaching, amounting to approximately 20 percent of full-time work. The PhD student(s) will be employed within the DECENT project (Socio-technical modularity and the decentralization of infrastructure), financed by the ERC: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101219042. Cities have long relied on centralized systems to provide critical public services such as electricity, water, and transportation. These large-scale network-based infrastructures often fail to meet social, economic, and environmental needs. The DECENT project aims to investigate how decentralized infrastructure solutions – such as microgrids, small-scale wastewater treatment, multimodal transport, short food supply chains, or distributed finance – overcome the historical legacies of large-scale infrastructure systems and deliver public services in more modular ways. The PhD students will study decentralization from a configurational socio-technical perspective, focusing on aspects such as: local and global industry dynamics, geography of innovation, sustainable transitions, and/or urban experimentation. Empirically, the project will study and compare infrastructure decentralization in high-income cities (e.g., European or North American) and middle-income cities (e.g., South or Southeast Asian). The PhD students are expected to: Design and conduct empirical research on infrastructure decentralization within various sectors (e.g., water, mobility, or food) and geographical contexts, in collaboration with the project team; Write sole-authored and co-authored scientific publications during employment; Work closely with the project team and contribute to joint meetings and activities; Present their research at national and international conferences; Write and defend a doctoral dissertation. WORK RESPONSIBILITIES As an EU Advisor, you are the Grants Office's expert resource for the EU Framework Programme (Horizon Europe, EU4Health, IMI/IHI) and related European programs relevant to financing Region Skåne's clinical research. You support clinical research groups from the very earliest idea phase, in consortium building, call matching, through to submitted applications and, if approved, project launch. You work proactively by monitoring upcoming calls, building networks with potential consortium partners, and identifying research groups within Region Skåne with potential to take coordinator roles in EU projects. Approximately 20 percent of your working time is allocated for outreach networking and consortium development work. Your work responsibilities include: • Monitoring and interpreting upcoming calls within relevant areas, such as Horizon Europe Cluster 1 (Health), Missions, EU4Health, and IMI/IHI, as well as upcoming framework programs (FP10) • Providing individual advisory support to research groups in call selection, consortium partners, and application strategy • Actively supporting partner searches by identifying relevant European partners and positioning Region Skåne in ongoing consortium processes, as well as participating in match-making events • Reviewing and providing feedback on application texts' scientific rigor, logic, and alignment with funder evaluation criteria • Collaborating with colleagues during the application process for application coordination and budget planning • Participating in and representing Region Skåne at European network meetings, information days, and partner meetings • Supporting post-grant launch for approved EU projects, specifically with consortium and project agreement administration and kick-off preparations • Training research groups and internal teams on EU program structure, logic, and requirements • Building and maintaining contacts with Region Skåne's development unit, EU office, and Lund University Region's Brussels office. QUALIFICATIONS We are looking for someone who has: • University/higher education in life sciences such as medicine, health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, or natural sciences, or equivalent education that we consider relevant for the position • Experience working with EU-funded projects, preferably Horizon Europe/Horizon 2020 • Very good understanding of EU project logic and budget models • Experience working in the EU Funding & Tenders Portal • Excellent ability to write and provide feedback on scientific and technical texts in English of high quality • Experience managing multiple parallel projects, completing and delivering tasks according to specified deadlines. It is meritorious if you have: • Experience as a project coordinator or work package leader in a Horizon project • Established and active relationships with National Contact Points for EU research programs • A doctoral degree or experience as a clinical or medical researcher • Knowledge of the clinical research environment, authorization requirements, and GCP regulations • Established contacts in European clinical research networks (ECRIN, EATRIS, ERN, etc.) • Experience in partner searches via CORDIS, Horizon Results Platform, or similar tools • Experience with funding instruments from foreign funders, such as American agencies (for example, NIH and DoD). You will support clinical researchers from call interpretation and idea development through to completed applications, with a focus on improving quality and accuracy in texts and budgets. You have deep understanding of how the Swedish Research Council's application process works, what Forte values in clinical research, and can serve as a sounding board for structuring applications for projects targeting the Cancer Society's calls. You are an active advisor who can challenge and strengthen the researcher's argumentation. Your responsibilities include: • providing individual advisory support to research groups preparing applications to national, government research funders, and subject-specific foundations relevant to clinical research • interpreting and communicating funders' assessment criteria, priorities, and requirements to research groups • reviewing application texts for scientific rigor, logic, and relevance to call requirements • supporting research groups in selecting the right funding type and funder given the project phase and researchers' qualifications • collaborating with colleagues during the application process for coordination and budget planning • coordinating internal processes including internal review and deadline management for applications • organizing training sessions and writing workshops ahead of major national calls (for example, from the Swedish Research Council, Forte, Cancer Society) • monitoring the calls calendar and informing research groups about upcoming opportunities • systematizing feedback from funders (reviewer comments, funding rationales) and sharing lessons learned with research groups • collaborating within the research funding ecosystem. QUALIFICATIONS We are looking for someone with: • university education in life sciences such as medicine, health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, or natural sciences, or other equivalent education that we deem relevant for the position • documented experience with national application processes - as an applicant, reviewer, or administrative support • good understanding of relevant calls for clinical research, or innovation-oriented calls from VINNOVA • ability to write and provide feedback on scientific texts in Swedish and English • experience working in a service-oriented manner with multiple parallel contacts while meeting deadlines. It is a merit if you have: • a doctoral degree, preferably with documented application experience as a primary or co-applicant from the government funders mentioned above • experience from a Grants Office, Research Service, or similar function • experience with foundation funding in medical research (Heart-Lung Foundation, Cancer Society, Childhood Cancer Foundation, etc.) • experience as a reviewer for a research funder.
