To communicate with prospective and current international students, we use student ambassadors – current students who can represent the university and share their experiences of what it's like to be a student at Gothenburg University. We are now seeking approximately 18 international student ambassadors. The position is placed at the Communications Unit, which is part of the university's central administration. We work with communication in many different areas: press, research communication, digital channels, student recruitment, visual identity, and more. Work tasks also occur at the university's International Centre. Work Tasks As an international student ambassador, you are part of a team of approximately 15-20 ambassadors from around the world with different educational backgrounds and fields of study. The main tasks for our ambassadors are: To communicate with prospective international students with a focus on providing information about what it's like to study at Gothenburg University. To support our welcome program for new international students and participate in events throughout the academic year. To create and manage content for social media: Some student ambassadors will have a special focus on working with the university's student account on Instagram. The tasks as a student ambassador are varied and flexible, and during the academic year there is an opportunity to engage in different activities. Examples of specific work tasks include: Participating in and hosting webinars and digital events Participating in virtual education fairs Creating content for social media Planning and conducting events for new students (e.g., preparations, logistics, activities during the event, and acting as a guide for visitors) Organizing social activities for new and current international students Participating in information sessions on various topics, such as life in Sweden, exchange studies, and internship opportunities For student ambassadors working with content creation: Developing ideas, producing and publishing posts, stories and reels, and managing the university's student account on Instagram The employment is intermittent/as needed and is paid on an hourly basis. There are no fixed working hours, and during the academic year different periods will be more or less work-intensive. As an international student ambassador, your assignments are flexible, and you can contribute with your own experiences and interests. You can plan much of your work independently or work together with other ambassadors – naturally always in a way that fits with your studies. You will be able to perform your work from home but are also welcome to visit the Communications Unit's and International Centre's offices for meetings and work sessions. The Department of Medicine, Division of Molecular and Clinical Medicine, conducts translational research primarily focused on metabolism, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease with the aim of improving health and healthcare in society. The overarching goal is to create an excellent translational research environment of very high international standard. The Romeo laboratory studies the biological and genetic mechanisms behind metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its progression to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Our research combines human genetics with experimental models to identify disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets. We use state-of-the-art cell culture systems, liver organoids, and molecular biological methods to investigate signaling pathways involved in liver injury and fibrosis. Responsibilities The successful candidate will participate in an experimental research project investigating genes involved in susceptibility to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. The responsibilities include establishment and maintenance of spheroid and organoid cultures from hepatocyte cell lines and primary human hepatocytes as well as generation and maintenance of stable mammalian cell lines. The work also encompasses the use of molecular biological methods, including DNA and RNA isolation, DNA cloning, transfection, PCR, protein expression analyses, and RNA expression profiling. Further, the candidate will perform biochemical analyses such as immunoblotting (Western blot), immunoprecipitation, subcellular fractionation, and siRNA-mediated gene silencing. The project includes metabolic flux experiments with radioactive tracers, as well as immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization experiments. Analysis of genetic and genomic datasets will be conducted using R- and Linux-based computational tools. The work also includes documentation, analysis, and presentation of experimental results as well as active participation in regular laboratory meetings and scientific discussions. The position offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in translational liver research and experimental disease modeling. Qualifications The applicant should have a background in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, biotechnology, cell biology, or another relevant life science discipline. Prior experience with organoid or spheroid culture or alternatively liver biology is required, as is practical experience with molecular biological work. Proficiency in spoken and written English is also necessary for the position. It is advantageous to have experience with omics analysis as well as work with mammalian cell culture, including spheroids and/or organoids, and generation of stable cell lines. Experience with molecular biological techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, cloning, PCR, transfection, and gene expression analysis is also meriting. Further, experience with biochemical methods, for example Western blotting, immunoprecipitation, and immunocytochemistry, is considered an advantage. Knowledge of RNA interference (siRNA) as well as experience analyzing biological data using R- and/or Linux-based environments is also meriting. Duties The Assistant Researcher will investigate the infiltration of PFAS in groundwater systems at artificial groundwater recharge facilities and develop methods to prevent this. The project is conducted in collaboration with Professor Lutz Ahrens (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU), Philip McLeaf (Uppsala Water and Waste), and Britt-Marie Pott (Envidan). A large part of the project will involve fieldwork at two artificial groundwater recharge facilities in Uppsala and Scania, combined with laboratory investigations at the Department of Earth Sciences at University of Gothenburg. Qualifications The applicant must hold a doctoral degree in environmental geology, contaminant hydrogeology, environmental chemistry, or a related field at the time of employment, and have documented experience with PFAS analysis using LC-MS/MS, including techniques for sample concentration through solid-phase extraction. Experience in conducting column experiments and field sampling of surface water and groundwater, particularly at artificial groundwater recharge facilities, is also required, as is fluent English proficiency in both spoken and written form. Subject Microbiology Subject Description The gut microbiota contains approximately 1,000 times more genes than the human genome and constitutes a complex ecosystem that affects the host's physiology through the production of bioactive metabolites. Despite major advances in microbiome research, it remains largely unknown how individual bacterial species and genetic variation between different bacterial strains contribute to microbiota function and the development of metabolic diseases. This project aims to identify and characterize bacterial species and strains within the families Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae, with particular focus on the genus Faecalibacterium, one of the most prevalent and functionally important bacterial groups in the healthy human gut microbiota. Duties The successful candidate will investigate the functional diversity of Faecalibacterium and its interactions with other gut bacteria through an integrated experimental and bioinformatic approach. The project combines comparative genomic and bioinformatic analyses to examine how genetic variation at the strain level affects bacterial metabolism and functional properties with physiological characterization of bacterial growth, substrate utilization, and production of bioactive metabolites under defined anaerobic culture conditions. Based on our observations that the presence of Faecalibacterium is associated with increased stability in the intestinal microbial community, likely through interactions with bacteria within the families Lachnospiraceae and Oscillospiraceae, the candidate will also isolate and characterize new bacterial strains from fecal samples from healthy donors. These isolates will be used in experimental models to study microbial interactions, cross-feeding, and their significance for host metabolism. The project integrates clinical cohorts, large-scale genomic analyses, anaerobic bacterial culture, metabolomics, and experimental model systems to identify microbial mechanisms and bioactive metabolites that contribute to metabolic health and that may form the basis for future microbiome-based treatments of cardiometabolic diseases. Qualifications Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is a person who holds a doctoral degree in a relevant subject area, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This qualification requirement must be met at the latest when the employment decision is made.
