Blocking the sale

  • Check the VIN

It is the car's identity. Through it you can trace history and origin, and confirm the car matches the advert.

  • Check the mileage history

Odometers are now wound back digitally and you will not see it on the dial. You only see it on a timeline of records.

  • Check the Register of Pledges for a charge

The most expensive mistake in the whole purchase: you pay, you drive away, and the lender comes to collect the car. A pledge cannot be seen in the registration document.

  • Check the seller is the registered OWNER

The registration document names both an owner and a keeper, and they need not be the same person. A keeper cannot sell you the car.

  • Both registration documents and a matching VIN

The VIN must match on both documents, on the body and on the manufacturer's plate. A discrepancy means either accident repair or a re-stamped number.

  • A written contract, in two originals

Without it you have nothing to enforce and it is harder to prove when you took the car over. For a car a handshake is not enough.

  • Pay in a way that proves what went to whom

Cash in an envelope in a car park leaves no trace. If something goes wrong you cannot prove you paid.

  • Register the transfer within 10 working days, ideally together

Under Act No. 56/2001 Coll. the application to register a change of owner must be filed within 10 working days of the transfer of ownership. Failure carries a fine of up to CZK 50,000 — and until the transfer, fines and liability follow the registered keeper.

  • Third-party insurance from the moment you take the car

You may not drive without it, and the seller's policy does not pass to you — their contract ends on the sale.

Still to do

0. Deciding

  • Write down what you actually need the car for
  • Budget for the purchase costs, not just the price
  • Work out the annual running cost, not the sticker price
  • Dealer, private seller, or import?
  • Do not buy under time pressure

1. Money

  • Arrange financing in advance
  • Price the insurance before you buy
  • Keep a reserve for the first repair

2. Choosing a model

  • Shortlist two or three models, not a brand
  • Learn the typical faults of the model you chose
  • Learn to read the advert

3. Remote checks

  • Check the car is not on the wanted list
  • On an import, find out where from and why

4. Inspection

  • Go over the body and underside in daylight
  • Insist on a test drive
  • Pay for a professional inspection on anything expensive

5. Negotiation

  • List the defects you found
  • Negotiate from findings, not from feeling
  • Be ready to walk away

6. Contract

  • Are you buying from a business or from a private individual?

8. After the purchase

  • Write a handover record
  • Book a service right after buying
  • Keep every document
