Buying a used car in Czechia, step by step

Why: Most bad purchases start with falling for one specific car before knowing what you are looking for.

How: Annual mileage, typical journeys, how many people, what you carry. That decides fuel, size and transmission — and halves the shortlist.

Why: On top of the car come the inspection, registration, insurance and almost always something that needs fixing straight away.

How: Price + inspection + registration + a year of insurance + a reserve for the first service. Keep the reserve even if it means a cheaper car.

Why: A cheap car with expensive running costs is dearer than an expensive one that is cheap to run. The gap runs to thousands a year.

How: Fuel at your mileage, insurance, servicing and tyres, tax and tolls, expected depreciation. Compare that number, not the price tag.

Why: Each channel has a different price and a different level of protection. From a trader you have statutory rights; from a private seller far weaker ones.

How: Compare actual offers across channels at the same condition and mileage. The price difference is what certainty costs — decide deliberately.

Why: Being in a hurry is the most expensive trait a buyer can have. Sellers spot it and stop discounting.

How: Allow two to six weeks. If you need a car tomorrow, rent one and buy calmly.

Why: Finance arranged at the dealer is usually dearer. And someone who does not know their limit cannot negotiate.

How: Compare cash, a loan and leasing. On a loan look at the APR and the total amount payable, not the monthly instalment.

Why: For some models, and for young drivers, the premium is high enough to change the whole budget.

How: Get quotes for third-party and comprehensive cover for that exact model and for you as the driver. Then decide.

Why: On a used car something the previous owner had been putting off almost always surfaces soon after purchase.

How: Set aside money for brakes, tyres, timing belt and oil. If you do not use it, it pays for the next service.

Why: A badge guarantees nothing — reliability varies by engine and by model year.

How: From your phase 0 needs, pick specific models and engines. For each, find out which production years are considered the good ones.

Why: Every model has its list. Knowing it tells you what to ask and what to have inspected — and exposes a seller who is evasive.

How: Read owner forums and workshop experience for that engine. Write down the three most expensive known faults and check for them specifically.

Why: Most problem cars can be filtered out from your desk. It saves you journeys and disappointment.

How: Few photos, all from a distance, a vague description, "must be seen", a price well under the market and a seller in a hurry are all warnings. Ask in writing and keep the answers.

Why: It is the car's identity. Through it you can trace history and origin, and confirm the car matches the advert.

How: Ask for the VIN before you travel and check it matches the equipment, year and engine. A seller who refuses to give it has a reason.

Why: Odometers are now wound back digitally and you will not see it on the dial. You only see it on a timeline of records.

How: Compare inspection and service records. If the reading falls between records, or does not match wear on the wheel and pedals, walk away.

Why: The most expensive mistake in the whole purchase: you pay, you drive away, and the lender comes to collect the car. A pledge cannot be seen in the registration document.

How: The Register of Pledges is kept by the Czech Chamber of Notaries. Any notary can issue an extract and will send it to your email or data box. On a car under lease or finance, also demand written confirmation that the finance is settled.

Why: A stolen car is seized and you do not get your money back. The check is free and takes a minute.

How: Enter the VIN in the public register of searched-for vehicles kept by the Police of the Czech Republic. On an import, check the register in the country of origin too.

Why: An import is not a problem in itself. An import that hides an accident, flood damage or different mileage is.

How: Ask for the documents from the country of origin and the import paperwork. Check the first registration date matches the model year, and get any big gap explained.

Why: The registration document names both an owner and a keeper, and they need not be the same person. A keeper cannot sell you the car.

How: Compare the ID document against the large registration document. If the names differ, demand a notarised power of attorney from the owner — and without one, do not do the deal.

Why: The VIN must match on both documents, on the body and on the manufacturer's plate. A discrepancy means either accident repair or a re-stamped number.

How: Check the large and small registration documents, the validity of the roadworthiness and emissions tests, the number of owners and the last registered owner. Find the VIN physically on the car and compare it character by character.

Why: Corrosion and accident repairs do not show in the dark or in the rain. And they are the most expensive faults you can buy.

How: Sills, arches, door bottoms, seams, boot, around the windscreen. Watch for uneven panel gaps and differing paint shades. Look underneath.

Why: A cold start, the gearbox and suspension noises cannot be assessed standing still. A seller who refuses has something to hide.

How: At least 15–20 minutes, town and open road. Ask for the engine to be cold. Watch the warning lights, brakes, steering, shifting and noises. Turn the radio off.

Why: An independent technician finds for a small fee what would otherwise cost you a fortune. It is the best value in the whole purchase.

How: Book an inspection at a workshop or independent technician paid by YOU. Get the result in writing — it is also a negotiating argument.

Why: A defect that is not written down does not exist. Not as a discount, and not as a later claim.

How: Make a list with photos and estimated repair costs. Use it to negotiate and have it attached to the contract.

Why: "Any chance of a discount?" does not work. "The brakes are due, here is the report" does.

How: Cost the defects, compare against similar cars, and name a specific figure. Know the limit you will not cross.

Why: The strongest negotiating tool is willingness not to buy. There are plenty of cars; this one is not the last.

How: Decide in advance what is non-negotiable: missing papers, a registered charge, a VIN mismatch, a refused test drive. When it happens, leave without debating.

Why: Without it you have nothing to enforce and it is harder to prove when you took the car over. For a car a handshake is not enough.

How: Both parties identified including birth numbers or dates of birth, the VIN, the odometer reading, the price, the date and time of handover, a list of known defects, and the seller's statement that the vehicle is free of any pledge or third-party rights.

Why: The difference is fundamental. In a sale between a business and a consumer your statutory rights over defects are far stronger than when buying from a private individual, and it feeds into what a fair price is.

How: Find out whether the seller is selling in the course of business — even where the advert looks private. Have any "sold as seen" wording explained; against a consumer it may not hold.

Why: Cash in an envelope in a car park leaves no trace. If something goes wrong you cannot prove you paid.

How: Prefer a bank transfer, ideally against signature and handover. With cash, insist on a receipt with the date, amount and signature.

Why: Under Act No. 56/2001 Coll. the application to register a change of owner must be filed within 10 working days of the transfer of ownership. Failure carries a fine of up to CZK 50,000 — and until the transfer, fines and liability follow the registered keeper.

How: The transfer is handled by the municipal authority with extended competence and can be done in one place. Agree to go there with the seller straight away. If that is impossible, hold a power of attorney and put the deadline in the contract with a penalty.

Why: You may not drive without it, and the seller's policy does not pass to you — their contract ends on the sale.

How: Arrange cover starting at the moment of handover, not the following day. Have the green card with you when you drive away from the seller.

Why: It fixes the condition and the moment from which you are responsible. Without it a dispute over a fault a week later cannot be won.

How: Date and time, odometer reading, number of keys, the equipment and documents handed over, both signatures.

Why: You do not know what the previous owner was deferring. Fluids and filters are cheap certainty.

How: Oil and filters, brake fluid, timing belt condition, alignment and tyres. Have the condition written up — it is the start of YOUR service history.

Why: When you come to sell, a documented history raises the price. And in a dispute it is all you have.

How: Purchase contract, inspection report, handover record, registration papers, service records and receipts. Digitally and on paper.
