Work Duties
In your role as staff legal counsel at the Royal Library (KB), you will encounter a wide variety of legal issues where you provide support to operations through legal advice, legal assessments, and participation with legal expertise in projects and other work at the agency. You respond to consultations, monitor developments in your field, provide training, collaborate, and conduct quality reviews of operations from a legal perspective. Areas of law that become relevant in your work include general administrative law, contract law, copyright law, legislation governing mandatory deposits of documents and electronic materials, and data protection matters.
Your role includes particular responsibility for legal issues that arise in the operations conducted at the KB Lab. KB Lab is a national infrastructure for digital research and development within AI. At the lab, researchers can conduct large-scale quantitative research on KB's collections of text, audio, images, and video. Within research projects at KB Lab, language models for AI are being developed, and KB has recently received additional assignments in this area.
Your role also includes providing legal support and advice in KB's internal AI development for operational efficiency, and ensuring that operations comply with applicable regulations and policy documents when using AI.
The position is placed at the Unit for Security and Legal Affairs, which is in an exciting development phase focused on strengthening and further developing legal support. This offers you good opportunities to contribute to operational development and shape future working methods. Qualifications and Personal Qualities
To succeed in this role, you need:
- Law degree (juristexamen/jur.kand)
- Several years of experience in qualified legal work
- Experience working with complex legal issues related to AI
- Experience working with copyright and data protection matters
- Understanding of work in research and development (R&D)
- Strong communication skills in both speech and writing in Swedish and English
Meritorious:
- Education in data science, computer science, or IT security
- Experience working at a government agency
- Experience in international work, particularly within the EU

Employment and Start Date
This is a permanent position that begins with a six-month probationary period. Start date as soon as possible or by agreement.
A security interview and background check may be conducted with the final candidate. The position is located in Humlegården in central Stockholm. KB has operations in different locations—Stockholm, Strängnäs, and Bålsta. KB allows remote work by agreement, up to three days per week.

About the Unit for Security and Legal Affairs
The Unit for Security and Legal Affairs is part of the Operations Support Department and currently consists of nine employees. The unit provides legal support and is responsible for KB's governance as a government agency. The unit is also responsible for records and case management and the agency archive. The assignment also includes coordinating, following up on, and developing KB's security work. A large part of the work will be to support the R&D Unit and KB Lab at KB's Department for Research Support and Collections Management.
